Viewing reports

Updated: February 1, 2011

Applies To: Forefront Threat Management Gateway (TMG)

This topic describes how to view one-time reports, user activity reports, site activity reports, and recurring report jobs.

Note

User activity reports are a new feature of Forefront TMG SP1; Site activity reports are a new feature of Forefront TMG SP2.

You can view reports via a standard browser, and use the hyperlinks to help you navigate to the content that you want to review. The following sections describe the different ways in which you can view the three types of report jobs.

For details on creating a report job, see Creating reports.

Note

From Forefront TMG SP2, reports no longer contain the IP addresses of the Forefront TMG server, which makes other values and percentage calculations more useful.

Viewing one-time, user activity, and site activity reports

One-time, user activity, and site activity reports provide an easy way to create reports when you need them. After configuring a one-time, user activity, or site activity report job using the appropriate report wizard, the job configuration appears in the details pane under One-Time Reports, User Activity Reports, or Site Activity Reports. The report’s name, type, start, and end dates are also displayed.

To generate and view a one-time, user activity, or site activity report

  • In the details pane, select a one-time, user activity, or site activity report job and click Generate and View Selected Report, either from the right-click context menu or from the Tasks pane. The report opens in a browser window.

    Note

You can provide access to the report without accessing the Forefront TMG Management console, if you configured the report to publish its data to a directory.

Viewing recurring report jobs

Recurring report jobs enable you to review log activity over regular periods of time (daily, weekly and monthly). After configuring a recurring report job by using the Recurring Report Job wizard, the job configuration appears in the details pane under Recurring Report Jobs. The report’s name, type, and the date that you created the report job are also displayed.

Note

The End Date is always displayed as "Ongoing", because recurring report jobs do not have an end date.

Viewing published reports

By publishing reports, you can share this data with others who do not have access to the Forefront TMG computer or the Forefront TMG Management console. In the case of one-time reports, publishing also allows you to save a snapshot of the data for the time period that is specified in the report.

Note

Recurring report jobs are always published, whereas the publishing of one-time and user activity reports is optional.

Published reports are stored in a subfolder of the directory you specified, named <Report_Job_Name>_(Start date—End date). For example, if you publish a report job named DailyReports scheduled to run from December 1 2008 through December 15 2008, the published reports folder will be named DailyReports_(12.1.2008—12.15.2008).

Important

Make sure that anyone who should have access to published reports has Read permissions to this folder.

To view a published report

  1. In the Forefront TMG Management console, in the tree, click the Logs & Reports node.

  2. In the details pane, click the Reporting tab, then select a report and click View Published Report, either from the right-click context menu or from the Tasks pane. The directory you specified as the published reports directory opens in Windows Explorer.

    Note

To view a published report without using the Forefront TMG Management console, navigate to the shared published reports directory that is specified in the report job configuration.

  3. Open the directory that contains the required report.

  4. Double-click report.htm. The report opens in a browser window.

    Note

You must first generate a one-time report in order for its results to be published.
