Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 (and more) Available

This evening we released IE7 Beta 2 at https://www.microsoft.com/ie. This release is not the preview or the update to the preview, but the real Beta 2 of IE7 for Windows XP SP2, Windows Server 2003 SP1, and Windows XP 64-bit Edition. Simply: please try it.

We acted on a lot of the feedback and bug reports from the previous public releases. In particular, I feel good about changes we made based on reports from web developers around some CSS behaviors, application compatibility feedback, reliability data (yes, we do analyze the information that comes when you click “Send Error Report”), and user experience feedback. People on the team will post additional details about changes over the next few days.

For those of you outside the United States, we will release German, Finnish, Arabic, and Japanese versions over the next three weeks.

This beta is another step to our goal of delivering a safer and easier browsing experience when we release the final IE7 product in the second half of this year. I’m looking forward to reading the feedback - positive and negative - as it comes in. Beyond consumers, I encourage developers, web developers, designers, and IT Pros to use Readiness Toolkit to deliver the best possible experience to end users in IE7.

For this Beta 2 release, we’re taking the extra step of offering no-charge phone support to consumers in North America, Germany and Japan. We’re offering phone support to encourage people who usually shy away from beta software to try IE7 Beta 2. We believe that IE7 - even at this beta stage - is a significant improvement and we want as many people as possible to try it and use it. IE7 is feature complete and has been through significant compatibility and reliability testing. People (especially technology enthusiasts) will have a good experience with it. 

What’s next? Windows Vista Beta 2, and then Beta 3 of IE7, release candidates, and then a final release before end of year.

    I'll reply to just one segment of Gans's comment:

    "Why arent the stop and refresh buttons just ONE button"

    Early versions of IE7 had them combined, and I'm glad they separated them back out.  There are several scenarios in which separate Refresh and Stop buttons are necessary:

    - Web page is still loading but you already want to refresh it.  Having one button would require you to click twice: once to stop, once to refresh.
    - Similar scenario to the above, except the page, once loaded, occasionally loads more data dynamically from the server (e.g. an AJAX-style page).  It makes sense that you should be able to Refresh it at any time, regardless of whether it's currently in a download operation.
    - Web page, fully loaded, is playing a background sound and you want to stop it.  You need a stop button to do this.

    Can't please everyone all the time, but so far it looks ok.

    Timeouts seem to be fixed and now I'll go hunt down some previous browse sequence problems.

    I kinda wish the full screen mode toolbar glitch was fixed, but maybe next rev.

    The new backgrounds on the buttons look cool and I just noticed the orange background the other day for a waiting dialog.  Nice, it immediately attracted my attention just the way it should.

    First some good points ;-)

    -My website works now in IE7b2!
    -The installation went really nice

    Now some bad points :(
    -I just installed it, and it is highly unstable!
    within 2 minutes IE 7b2 crashed twice!
    -Hovering links looks really slow several sites.
    -The addressbar, when it 'pops' out to show history, shows it over the tabs, making the tabs invisible.. mm it hangs again :(

    Nice work out there ..... i m now downloadin the beta 2 ......

    Has the following issues been resolved ??

    1. Yahoo Mail login page ....... text is misplaced at http://mail.yahoo.com

    2. Sometimes all images in the webpage do not load at first run ..... u have to refresh again to load the remaining images ..... this problem was mostly noticed in pages where there were lots of large sized images.

    I use 4 tabs when my browser opens.  I have some links in my first tab that open a 5 tab, which is what I want.  Not when I am done with that 5th tab I close it.  I want to automatically go back to the first tab but I end up in the 4th tab (last tab after I close the fifth).  This is not the tab I was in before the fifth tab opened, I want to go to the tab I had open before the fifth tab opened (the first tab).  

    So far setup was pretty straight forward.  Also is there a way to move the URL window right above the tabs?

    Is anyone else seeing 100% CPU utilisation after installing this. I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2 with all hotfixes. I installed this on my notebook that was running IE6 with all updates. Now, everytime I launch IE7 I see that task manager reports iexplore.exe using 99% of the CPU. Any ideas? Can I roll back to IE6?

    @EricLaw: thanks I had just figured it out prior to your post. I went to uninstall IE7 from the control panel and noticed that I had the developer toolbar installed, so I tried to uninstall that first. Now it's working ok. Cheers!

    This morning i downloaded it and installed it. Unfortunatly my biggest problem i have is still unsolved.

    I still can't upload and/or edit photo's in my Spaces of MSN.

    Shame, but the rest of IE7 beta 2 looks very good. It's also a lot quicker.

    Worked once and after that freezes every time opened. I am used to trying out beta versions of firefox they crash after a few days use. This everytime I open it, I would like to test my current web site work but can't.

    @Henrie: What happens when you try to upload photos to MSN?

    @Mike: Do you have the toolbar installed? The hang/crash on boot is a symptom of a buggy plugin or BHO.  Have you tried running IE in add-on free mode?  Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools.

    While the previews of the beta worked fine, I can not get this beta to work:
    After starting IE, it uses 100% cpu and you can not close or move the window.
    But interestingly enough, it is possible to browse through pages.
    But I can not switch from favorites to feeds: When I try to do that, my window gets corrupted (some black rectangle where possibly a tooltip for a feed should show up etc)

    I really like the new builds - have been using the preview for some time and it's replaced Firefox as my browser of choice.  Just to counter the criticism of the UI, I think it works great as it is.  I appreciate that a typical user might have to make a bit of effort to adapt, but I think it's a big improvement on just about any other browser UI out there.  I'm glad the Stop and Refresh buttons are seperate again, and I dispute the suggestion that the UI team "don't know what they're doing", it's refreshing that something  different has been tried rather than feeling obliged to leave the buttons in the same places as they've always been in.

    Is this just a bug-fix/tweak release from the Beta Preview? Without wishing to imply you're lazy, why will the full release only take place later this year? With so much time until launch, couldn't the rendering engine be worked on some more?

    Fingers crossed there'll be an IE7.5 next year, with complete CSS2.1 support - and, who knows, E4X or SVG...

    Are there any plans or tips for using IE7 next to IE6 ? Unfortunatly we - as webdesigners/developer - will still to need support IE6 for along time to come. It would make live so much easier then if we just could use IE7 next to IE6... .

    We could use virtual machine's but buying for every developer a windows an virtual pc licence just to support older IE6 browsers seems overkill. Clearly there must be a solution for this.

    cjackson27, I had problems installing the new beta as well. The IE7 uninstaller was missing from add/remove. I hunted down the uninstaller path on another computer, simply running it removed IE7B2P and I could install the new beta...

    Path to the uninstaller (at least on my computer): WindowsFolder$NtUninstallie7beta2$spuninstspuninst.exe

    I guess if you've deleted this folder (when doing your house cleaning) you could try copying this folder from another computer. Though I would suggest copying it from a computer that's similar to yours (given IE's thight integration with Windows). Might work...

    Disclaimer: I have no idea if this might work, nor do I know what unwanted side effects this might have...

    @Stecki: I can confirm this on Windows XP x64 Edition machine only with 32bit Internet Explorer. 64bit version on XP x64 and 32bit version on XP SP2 works fine.

    In this version tabs function does not work for me. I don't have tabs in the top of browser visible, even that they are enabled. I can shitched on them only by ctrl+tab keys combination. Beta2 preview worked fine for me. Where is the problem?

    I posted this on Channel9 too, but I'll repeat it here:

    It worries me that my two current pet bugs aren't fixed yet (well, one of them worries me, the other I didn't report until this weekend so it's not strange it hasn't been fixed).

    The first one (which is the one I reported nearly two months ago) is the "IE7 displays an unneeded horizontal scrollbar when the page contains right-floated italic text" (example: http://www.ookii.org/misc/scrollbarbug.html, https://connect.microsoft.com/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?SiteID=4&FeedbackID=47754). This one has existed since the first IE7 Beta2 Preview for XPSP2, and has been in every build for XP or Vista since.

    The second one is "An element with position:absolute inside an element with position:relative inside an element with a left padding subtracts the padding from the absolute offset" (example: http://www.ookii.org/misc/position_absolute_padding_bug.html, https://connect.microsoft.com/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?SiteID=4&FeedbackID=64156). This one was in the previous IE7 Beta2 Preview, but it wasn't in Vista 5342. It did however show up in Vista 5365 which is when I bugged it.

    Both of these bugs happen in strict mode, are not due to IE6 workarounds but actual bugs in IE7, and have been seen on actual pages "in the wild" which would need to be modified if they aren't fixed. The last thing us web developers need is another set of workarounds that apply to IE7 but not to IE6.

    Why do you think everyone has to "learn" a new frontend for web browsing? In navigation and also settings 'intuitively' seem unknown. It is like a car with a wheel under the hood. PLEASE ask some users instead of geeks!

    The UI hasn't at all changed from the last release as far as I can tell. It still has all the browsing buttons all over the place rather than together, the optional menu bar in between the tabs and address bar instead of at the top where people are used to it being, and absolutely no degree of customization available to the user. Were all the UI suggestions from the previous release simply ignored? If you just couldn't fit UI changes into this beta release, fine, just please give us some indication that you're actually listening to our suggestions.

    I'm switching over to Firefox permanently if this is the UI I have to deal with on a permanent basis. I further dread the idea that the UI for Vista is gonna be similar.

    Developer Toolbar appears to be breaking redirects on the newest build.  I submitted a bug using the Beta Tool, but for those Toolbar Developers, I thought this might go quicker.

    I'm assuming we'll see a new build of it in the not too distant future, as has been the case with previous preview releases.

    The new build of IE7 is fantastic otherwise.  Keep up the great work.  One feature request?  I'm addicted to the RSS feed aggregator, but I would LOVE for it to notify me when a feed has been updated with a sound or a popup or something.  I realize this may be too much, but it sure would be a handy addition.  Then I could lose FeedReader.

    (still using IE7b2 7.0.5335.5, with a very irritating history option that forgets pages and willing to upgrade right away :). Dutch WinXP.

    Reinstalled after uninstalling to IE toolbar and the hanging problem has stopped. Initially seems ok, although I think there are problems with using vml and page zoom. I need to investigate this a bit further though.

    Well done to the team for finally improving the Find dialog. It used to take seconds to open but now Ctrl-F is almost instant and with it defaulting to a corner of the screen it actually let's you see what you're searching for!

    i spoke with an IE team member yesterday (Margaret Cobb, Internet Explorer Group Product Manager at Microsoft,) and she told me that IE Beta 2 would be available on Microsoft Update as an optional download.
    Unless my MIX build happens to be blocking it i don't see it.
    Is IE 7 B2 going to be avail on Microsoft update or did Margaret lead me astray?

    I'm really not sure why MS is so reluctant to offer a standalone mode.  I'm thrilled that MS is putting effort into IE (even though I am a FF user) but if I can't test my pages properly on IE6 and IE7 this is a major issue.  I know that you guys know about it - why don't you care?

    I agree with Mele, there is something very wrong with the new text. I find my eyes strain while using the browser, and it appears worse on certain pages. I have mild astigmatism which I am sure compounds the issue, but I never had a problem with IE6.

    I hope this is not how text is rendered in vista.

    I guess there is a lot of work required in terms of CSS rendering issues. I tried opening 10-12 pages and found 3-4 unusual things. The most annoying one being the gmail menu buttons having wierd wrapper around their names. (Inbox, Sent, etc.)

    Navigation buttons all over the place, just stick to the basics !!

    All in all, good work. I personally like the "Quick Tabs" feature.

    You should try turning off ClearType. In the Advanced Tab of your Internet Options in IE, there is a "Use ClearType" setting in the Multimedia area. Uncheck that.

    Feedback about the UI was heard and there are some changes. Now, that being said, the UI as a whole is moving in a new direction and this is not being abandoned. There is going to be a period of adjustment for some but we think the new UI is much better overall.

    The gui changes are superb! Despite what the mumurers say, I like the refresh/stop button change. It makes browing quicker. And the coporate-blue tab bar looks much more professional than firefox's.

    Now that we are getting close to seeing IE 7 finally complete, are you guys happy you've dealt with the various memory leaking issues to do with JavaScript/JScript?

    Most of the ones reported by the JSAN people seemed to do with things like closures and the use of anonymous functions as event handlers, and so on.

    Are you happy all of those cases, and other similar edge cases, and going to be worked out for IE 7 release?

    @piotr potera: Yes, there are differences between this version (06/04/24) and the 20th of march build.  Primarily, we've made a ton of bugfixes, but there are some other behavior and functionality tweaks as well.

    The minor improvements in the UI, especially the tabs are really nice. Feel like the user interface is using even less space now, which is great. Back and Forward history bugs look to be fixed as well. On first glance, kudos!

    IE7 worked fine for a bit with Firefox 1.5.0.2 However, firefox then crashed and refused to reboot insisting on sending messages to MS. Removed IE7 Firefox seems to work fine now :-)

    The improvements, especially to the GUI which becomes the most noticeable to the average internet user, are reassuring so far.

    I'm still pushing towards the stop/refresh to be next to the back/forward (it's all relative people!) but I doubt they'll revert the design.

    There is not going to be a changelist. We do not compile these internally and we have done a lot of general bug fixes over the last month. A laundry list of bug titles would not be useful.

    Well, what can I say? My only problem is that I have absolutely no say in how I customize the toolbars. I want the classic menu to be at the top and I don't want that command bar.

    Thank you, EricLaw - that looks much better with that bar where it's been for over a decade. Now let's just get it so I don't have to go into my registry to do it: us techies might understand it but I wouldn't be sending your average user into the registry without parental supervision. ;)

    Hi, I was pretty amazed on how stable IE7 is now. Websites render better, there is still a hover rendering problems for links. If you look at my website and hover over a link in the bottom. It jumps.

    Everything else is nice. the RSS is amazing :) I wish IE could have a RSS Live Bookmark so we place on the roolbar.

    There is one problem which I don't enjoy at all.
    When your using Tabbed browsing I would like to see the inactive tab dimmed a bit in color. The color is the same thing... I would like it to be a bit darker to represent its not active.

    Why does the toolbar changes with tabs? once I open a new tab and go to it the links toolbar dissapears....why :(   ?

    I agree with the other comments, and the scattershot approach to the UI is unintuitive and a deal-breaker for a lot of people I know. Having to move the pointer all the way to the opposite side of the screen to click on a button is a horrible design that I don't want to get "adjusted" to. If it were a better design than the old one then I would adapt, but I'm not interested in adapting to something that's inferior when there are better alternatives out there. You've squandered the chance to win me back.

    On one hand any change to the UI norm, even if truly better, will take a period of adjustment. On the other hand, some of the UI changes that I see in IE7 are novice mistakes (?) ... almost like there were no anthropological studies conducted about the UI changes and that the changes were driven or at least facilitated in some way by marketing.

    The mouse should be required to move as little as possible. (Not moving it at all = keyboard shortcut). So, almost all navigation buttons should be grouped together, and one shouldn't have to move across screen from prev/next buttons to the home/refresh buttons. Just think how much screen real estate has to be traversed with a 25" widescreen LCD monitor!

    Menu... put it at the top. Until voice recognition rivals Star Trek accuracy, the menu will remain the focal point of UI control. The address and nav bar is the focal point of navigation, not UI control.

    I've used the Vista UI. Same comments. If MS maintains this UI direction without at least official built in on screen support (ie- not just a registry setting) to customize the layout then I foresee a tough sell.

    This probably isn't the right place and my apologies if the reasoning behind the current design has been addressed in the past, but having the address bar above the tabs really doesn't seem intuitive, or functional, or visually attractive.

    Having the address bar located right underneath the tab (see picture link) makes sense to me because it is something that applies to the current tab only and not IE as a whole. For example: the address changes if you click on a different tab, and if you type in a new address, it changes the current tab so functionally speaking the address bar is a property of the currently open tab and its logical position would therefore seem to be where I placed it, underneath the tab.

    Realizing that tastes invariably vary, I do think it blends in better this way as opposed to looking distinctively out of place where it is located right now.

    im highly enjoying ie7, and this beta 2 is the best yet.  i really enjoy the shading on the tabs and the other new ui touches.

    I can't uninstall the IE 7 preview version - the Add/Remove panel removed the uninstall folder from the windows directory, but didn't uninstall IE 7.... Do I have to do a repair installation of XP SP2 to fix this?

    IE7 crashes when invoked from desktop shortcuts created by dragging out favorites from the prior IE, and also when invoked from inside Knight Online after exiting the game.

    Other than that, it looks cool and renders much faster.

    @Dao: I think I've narrowed down what's causing the problem with your menu. A floated element that contains a block level element with a specified height is not actually floated. This happens in both IE6 and IE7.

    I'll file a bug report on this. Since it's not a regression and they're in layout freeze, I wouldn't hold my breath though.

    For the people or person experiencing Firefox crashes, I have 1.5.0.2 (latest "stable") and it's not crashing anymore than it usually does. The non-modal find dialog is a very welcome feature in IE7, but I hope I can dock it in IE8 to the bottom of the screen.

    For the people mentioning the menu being in the wrong place, I fixed that in my copy (it was done through regedit, don't remember exactly how :|). Also, people using VS2005 trying to create Windows CE C++ programs might run into an unexplained project creation failure that turns out to be an issue created by IE7 (maybe fixed in Beta 2? dunno). This also involves using regedit to fix.

    What is KB 915865? I just went to System Restore and, to my surprise, I found a restore point from about 12 hours ago made just before this KB was installed. I have auto updating disabled. I install all patches manually. I didn't install this KB and when I search for it at TechNet, I get  "The Knowledge Base (KB) Article You Requested Is Currently Not Available". When I use BelarcAdvisor it says this Hotfix is installed but when I click on "details" it takes me to Microsoft with a 404 error. There is one article only on a Google search and it is in a foreign language.

    I am speculating this is the Validation tool as a Microsoft MVP, who got the latest IEbeta, also has it and doesn't know what it is but wonders if it is the Validation tool. If so, why is there no KB? Why is a tool showing up as a critical patch? How come I can't uninstall this "critical patch"?  I can uninstall all other Hotfixes. If this has nothing to do with installing IE7 latest beta then I apologize for posting this here.

    Yeah, customization would be great! Let's delay the ship date to, oh, say August, 2008!

    I work for hours with IE, specifically IE7, and believe you me, O people who haven't yet made up your minds: the ui is how it should be. The opposition is a people who like a browser that doesn't even have the close button on the individual tabs. :)

    Before installing any of the Internet Explorer 7 betas we are required to uninstall previous builds and you detail the steps to do just that. However, not only do I not have an "Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 preview" entry under "Windows XP - Software Updates" (whether or not "Show updates" is checked), I also lack both the $NtUninstallie7b2pmx$ or equivalent directory for build 5335.5 and the corresponding System Restore Point. How do I uninstall the older version in this instance?

    @Joel: If you read the comments above and the release notes, you'll likely find that having an outdated version of the IE Developer toolbar is causing your hang.  Remove it and install the new one, and the hang goes away.  Best of luck.

    Some people seem to think that you should let them install IE 7 next to IE 6 so to save money. If you run a company you buy the computers you need for all the testing you have to do.

    For example:
    A company I worked for here in Sweden needed to replace Windows NT and Windows 95 to Windows 2000 about 4 years ago. What we did was this, we bought 50-60 cheap machines which could run win 2k perfectly and started testing which applications worked with Win2k and when it didn't.
    I have never formatted a computer so many times as I did during those months.
    But we needed to test over 1000 applications which had to work along side eachother without hiccups or system errors and such.
    So what you developers have to do yourself and not complain about not having money (because then in my opinion you shouldn't be allowed to run a company with good service on the web in the first place) is to go out and buy a cheap machine where you install Win2k or WinXP and have that as a test machine.

    I'm not rich, don't even have lots of money on my bank account and yet I manage to have 4 computers with Mac OS X, WIndows XP Pro, Home and Slackware.
    Am I too harsh? Hope not, just tired of people complaining about a situation which they themselv can do something about.
    Microsoft has several times told us that they will not and have no plans of supporting side by side installations. Is that so hard to grasp?

    I want a perfectly functioning new filesystem like WinFS in Vista, I wont get it and I don't complain, I wont get virtual folders, I can still manage.

    So you can still manage too, even as a web developer with little or no money. Take more money for the sites you build and you can afford it.

    @Mele: Your readability problem could be related to ClearType being on by default if that bothers your eyes. In the Tools - Internet Options - Advanced Settings under the Multimedia area you can turn off ClearType. An alternative is to use the ClearType tuner from the Typography web site at: http://www.microsoft.com/typography/ClearTypeInfo.mspx

    No, I have a 19" flat panel LCD digital monitor. When I got it in Nov 2003 with my first XP computer, I had never heard of ClearType. I hated the monitor (images were stunning though) because all the text was fuzzy and jagged edges. Someone told me to turn on
    ClearType in XP which I did but that didn't help.  I was ready to return the expensive monitor to Dell (it was rated the number 1 LCD flat panel by various groups so I was really puzzled why it was so hard to read the text. Text on my Trinitron CRT was easy to read). Finally, someone pointed me to ClearTweak which was a miracle. It took away the jagged edges and let me set the contrast same as the later developed Clear Type Tuner Microsoft tool allows.
    Suddenly, I could read the text just fine.

    So, Clear Type is NOT the problem here. The earlier IE betas had this problem on many websites, but it is worse in this beta. Going backwards is not a good sign. I put up with it in the earlier betas but I expected this to be fixed by now. There are many sites such as castlecops.com that I simply cannot visit using IE7 if I have Verdana for my font. Verdana font looks great on my other browsers at  castlecops.com and the other sites where IE7 has a big problem.

    If I were to turn off Clear Type that would turn it off for my other browsers. I stated that they look great at the websites IE has a problem with and Clear Type is on. So, obviously it cannot be a Clear Type issue. I don't think you read my comment very closely.

    Regarding my earlier comment about KB 915865, that "critical patch" must be connected to IE7. It is listed in C:WINDOWS$NtUninstallie7beta2$spuninst

    I really want to know what this patch is. If it is just the Windows Validation Tool that auto runs before IE7 is installed, then why did it require that a restore point be set?

    I am very uncomfortable with having a critical patch installed without my knowledge or consent (I don't use auto updating rather all patches are done manually from MS download site) and then not even being able to find a KB article or any information about this patch.

    I am about to use System Restore to the point made before this patch was installed which will also remove IE7. It is bedtime here, so I will wait for a response from someone at MS until tommorow morning.

    If this is the validation tool, then why can't I uninstall it? I see the validation tool in Add/remove programs and it is not uninstallable. I would never have consented to the scan if I thought something was being installed that I could not later uninstall. Another reason to use System Restore (or Acronis True Image) . But I will wait until tomorrow to see if Microsoft can give me some reasonable explanation.

    YES!!! It appears that the nested OBJECT tag handling is finally fixed in IE 7. Now we can nest OBJECT tags and IE won't display the nested tag if it is able to render the first one. IE used to render the nested tag anyway resulting in an additional block. I guess this deserves a 'Thank you!' for making the lives for web devs a lot less complicated again.

    @Wraith: Do you seriously think the opposition is Firefox?  They're the best friends the IE team could have, whether the team knows it or not.  They show the team what can be done and gives them ideas on how to do it.  No, the opposition is the Mac/*nix browsers, and ALL the good Mac browsers, at least, are toolbar-customizable.  In fact, nearly all Mac applications are customizable.  It's not really a choice for developers anymore: you make the app customizable, or it's second-tier.
    Until you've used Camino 1.0 on OS X 10.4, don't even get me started on how bad the Windows browsers are.  It's not even a competition right now.  There's a reason Microsoft bailed out of the Mac browser market.

    @Wraith: Yes, adding customization may very well make the release take longer, but have you considered it might be worth it? I'd rather Microsoft take it's time to release a product that is on par or superior to the other choices on the market rather than quickly release an inferior product. It's fine if you like the UI, but you can't really expect to tell us what our preferences should be and have us all agree with you - I work in a QA lab, I have to make sure our product runs on IE7, and I happen to dislike the setup. My co-workers also agree with me on that. As far as the rest of it goes, it's a pretty solid browser(for a beta anyways) - my only beef is with the UI. Customization would make those who dislike the UI much happier. Firefox has a great degree of customization, IE6 has a decent amount at least, so why shouldn't IE7?

    Also, don't exaggerate - adding customization shouldn't add more than a month or two to the release, definitely not years.

    I just figured that a market where the open-source people are paying people to switch to their browser is bad for us payed developers. And definitely competition. But I can't argue for or against the Maccers; I still haven't upgraded from my Apple II+. :)

    @Al - well, you can maintain that you've gotten good reactions, but the primary reactions I've seen are bad. Seeing as one day I'll have to move on to Vista most likely and I won't have a choice of using IE6 I'll be permanently moving to Firefox. Expect others to follow and your market share to drop even further.

    I've managed to install IE7 without uninstalling the previous version by replacing iexplore.exe with an IE6 version.

    - Close all applications
    - Find yourself a IE6 iexplore.exe (I've searched my harddisks for it. It should be around 90-100KB, IE7 is 200+KB.)
    - Back-up your IE7b2p iexplore.exe (rename it to iexplore.bak for example) which should be in C:Program FilesInternet Explorer
    - Copy the IE6 iexplore.exe into this folder
    - Install IE7 Beta 2. The installer checks the version of iexplore.exe to see if it is pre-7 (which it now is) and continues.

    If install fails, reboot, restore your backed-up iexplore.exe and you are where you started.

    There might be side effects, but i've seen non. Microsoft probably doesn't support this...

    Here's my experience with IE 7:
    1) Installed the IE 7 beta.
    2) Restarted system.
    3) Fired up Windows Media Player to listen to streaming audio of my favorite radio station.
    4) Got this error: "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. If the file is located on the Internet, connect to the Internet. If the file is located a removable storage card, insert the storage card."

    Commentary: Well, this is typical. You install one MS product just to corrupt another one. I understand that this is a beta, but this is a very poor first impression.

    I guess now I'll reinstall WMP and see if that works. Even if it does, I'm sticking with Firefox.

    I'd just like to comment on the quality of Beta 2.  So far, I am loving this build.  It is compact, speedy, and stable.  The steady, incremental improvements since the first public beta have been excellent.

    Personally, I quite like the new UI.  Sure it takes some getting used to, but life with a hidden menu bar isn't that bad :)  The most important features are quickly accessed, and are positioned well, although I'm not quite convinced that the Stop and Refresh buttons should quite so far from Back/Forward. That could be the creature of habit talking.  It's nice to see that the IE team is not afraid to make risky UI decisions that you know some people may not like. In the long run, I think the doubters will realize that you've done a good thing here.

    I'd still love to see a word-wheel search (à la Windows Live Messenger) at the top of the Favorites menu.  Maybe for a future release!

    but only good thing is that i know its beta and i hope thats its gonna b a good real product.

    i really liked when IE shifted from ie5.5 to ie6. but to make a shift from ie6 to ie7 requires a lot more especially when we have strong free candidates like OPera.

    I have been using my Hotmail account in Outlook with ie6 for a long time behind an ISA 2000 server (fw client installed w/ no proxy configured).  I installed the ie7 beta 2, which has now broken this functionality.  Is this by design, a beta issue or do I just need to configure something different?

    I see there is an "open in tab group" from your favorites menu, which is just fantastic for opening multiple sites at once.

    Anyway to make this work on the Links bar, so in one click you could open all my favorite News sites in tabs, or Shopping sites, etc...

    No installation issues on my front; everything works fine, though I also whole like to have full control of the toolbars too.

    TABS AREN'T WORKING.  So i uninstalled IE7 Beta 2 then IE6 wouldn't work properly.  So I reinstalled IE7, and I'm stuck.  I think I might truly switch to Firefox even though I don't like how the mozilla browser functions--I've gotten used to IE over the years.

    When accessing FTP Sites, I find that I now have to first enable the 'Classic Menu' before I can select 'Open FTP in Explorer'.

    Is there a way I can make a shortcut to this option without having to display the 'Classic Menu'?

    IE was NEVER the superior browser, and therefore, it's dominanance never had anything to do with technical quality -- the only reason it achieved dominance is because it is installed by default, and too many people are either too lazy, or ignorant of the fact that they can, install other browsers.

    But... since when has MS ever been really concerned about quality -- if they were, their products wouldn't STILL be stuck in the 1950's single-user model.  Modern-LOOKING (but not-behaving) GUI, but underneath that, a computing model which was already outdated by the 1960's.

    Don't expect MS to change until the 'droids finally wake up and look for products which are truly superior.

    Are you running Google Desktop? There is a known issue (known to Google as well) that if Google Desktop is set to index your browser history, it will cause a crash when you open tabs in IE7. If you tell it to quit indexing this data (or remove Google Desktop), the crash will stop.

    I was running the IE7 pre-beta, and uninstalled it per the instructions to install this new beta2, and the installer errors out: <a href="http://imageshack.us"><img src="http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/5919/ie7error1ev.jpg" border="0" width="609" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us" /></a>

    Oh well.  Back to firefox.

    @Mark: What operating system are you using?  What symptoms are you having when Outlook can't connect to hotmail?

    @Paul: You can simply hit the Alt key to momentarily show the classic menus.

    @Aaron: If you think Microsoft products have a single-user model, please uninstall Windows 3.0 and install Windows XP. You'll like it.

    Thanks for responding Eric,
    I am using Windows XP SP2 and Office 2003 Pro Corp Ed.  I have an exchange mailbox for my work email and two addtional Hotmail HTTP accounts for me and my wife's personal emails.  When I open Outlook, I have to cancel out of 4 login boxes (2 for each hotmail account).  If I accidently select one of the hotmail accounts while in Outlook, I will keep getting the login boxes until I select another folder.  The authentication worked seamlessly until the first time I opened Outlook after installing ie7.  Now it seems to have trouble passing the authentication traffic through ISA.  I will bring my laptop home tonight to see what happens with no firewall.

    @EricLaw:  Well it's not an ISA proxy issue afterall.  I'm at home with no proxy.  Internet Explorer is functioning fine but the Outlook HTTP accounts still cannot authenticate anymore.  I'm sure if I uninstall ie7, Outlook-Hotmail will start working again but I'm really hoping I don't have to do that.  Any suggestion you have will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    @Mark: That behavior would be caused if you don't have the latest WDigest package on your machine.  Did you choose to install updates during IE7 setup?  When you visit WindowsUpdate, are you offered a WDigest update?

    I installed Beta2 5346.5 built (on xp pro sp2)using administrator account. It is running without error.

    But when I login using another user (from admin group) every 2-3 minutes I am getting RUNDLL error message dialog with following message:

    "Error in c:windowssystem32msfeeds.dll Missing entry:Scheduler"

    Is it my installation is corrupt? but I did not had any error message during installation and I do not get this message when I login using administrator user.

    How can IE6 have the features to customize the toolbar, address bar, button position, size and text label. What idiot thought it would be a good idea to remove this code from the new IE7?

    I've never completely switched to FireFox, but I will if IE7 doesn't have any toolbar customization settings that don't require editing the registry!

    Wake up M$, and listen to what your customers what!

    @Avi: If you have tabs enabled, then the problem is likely an old version of a toolbar (Google or MSN) that is overriding your right-click menu.

    @Yogesh: Regarding your RunDLL32 issue-- This is the result of the IE7b2p uninstall failing to clear the old runddl32.exe background sync task.  Go into Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance | Scheduled Tasks.  Find the task that is calling rundll32 and delete that task. It should be fine after that.

    I don't think anyone's asking you to change the chrome.  The look and feel isn't the problem, it's the lack of customization that's the problem.  (Please don't try to tell me that the position of a couple of buttons is central to the entire new Vista UI!)

    Office, for example, lets me customize every toolbar, and even the individual menu items; yet it still retains a definite Microsoft feel.  In IE7, no matter where I put those buttons, they're going to look the same.  The toolbar colour is going to be the same.  It's the same UI, just adjusted for personal preference.

    Something else to keep in mind is that this isn't just getting used in Vista.  It's getting used in XP, and many MANY corporate installs of XP have those silly big blue Windows disabled.  From a UI point of view, we're still using Windows 2000 (and some of us like it that way.)

    Having installed and started IE 7 Beta 2 I'm facing real difficulties - the process "iexplore.exe" is up to 99% CPU immediately. Does anybody have to deal with the same problem and has fixed it?

    Thank you Eric.  I was having this problem too -- I will try uninstalling Google's toolbar when I get home. :-)

    @elmario: As noted in many blog comments, the primary cause of the bug where IE uses a ton of CPU on startup is that a buggy toolbar is installed; usually, the old version of the IE Developer toolbar.  Install the new toolbar and you should be fixed.

    By this logic, Apple was outdated when it released the Apple I, which to my knowledge didn't even have a proper OS, let alone user management.

    That said, I am looking forward to the extensions of a multi-user environment in Vista.

    The zoom feature is great!  All those websites that use fixed font sizes that are too small to read are now readable when zoomed in.  At first I was surprised when ctrl-mousewheel didn't change the font size, but when I figured out that it was doing isotropic zomming I was happy. It is what I always wanted.

    i had installed IE7 on a WinXP SP2. After installation i restarted my PC and then tried to open IE, it never opened. The window came and closes automatically..now had to switch back to IE 6.

    checked eventvwr and got this msg

    Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 7.0.5346.5, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x00001010.

    Hi,
    Has anyone encountered problems with Tab display? I can't find tabs anywhere on the screen. I know multiple tabs are open but they are not showing on the screen.
    I have reverted back to build 5335 and am happy. The new built just bunched all the icons together with tabs missing.

    @Karan: Above, [Matrix] offers a suggestion for what to do to make tabs display.  I've never had this problem, so I'm not sure if this will actually fix it, but it's worth a try.

    [Matrix] Fix for hidden tabs:
    1.unpack ie7 beta2
    2.goto folder "update"
    3.install patch "xmllitesetup.exe"

    Thanks for your comments.

    i tried opening in safemode but same problem..then i tried with no-addons..same problem again.
    Then i checked my event viewr and found out that it was showing some DCOM error!
    then i started the "Distributed Link Tracking Client" i is working now! .
    Not sure what are the services IE7 requires to be on and moreover it dosent throw proper error messages. Also there is no list of services that needs to be started in IE7!

    Not a developer, just a regular user; and even thought at first glance I did think the layout was weird, because it was significantly different than the previous versions, I've been using ie7 for about 3 days and I really like it so far. Sure there are still little bugs and problems for you guys to fix but overall I got used to the location of the different buttons and now I would feel weird going back to the 'old' way. The only thing I really wanted in the new version was tabs, and now there are tabs so I'm ecstatic. Keep up the great work!

    To dongbinghua of course it is free and if you were not reading this page then read it. It shows the link to where you can get it.But i would wait until you get an extra pc to test this one because if you don't it will give you a problem after you have used it for a while of testing.

    Problem number 1 i got after i used it for a while today it started fast then went slower and slower after i used it more then a hour and that is very bad.so wait unless you want to take that risk.

    @EricLaw: The IE Developer toolbar wasn't installed. Nevertheless I've downloaded it with the link you published on April 25, but the CPU is still up to 100%. Also, the IE looks the same like before - I guess some toolbar should be there now (I'm not a developer). I have to files now: "Internet Explorer" and "Internet Explorer Developer Toolbar". It doesn't matter whether I enable or disable this add-on. What else could be the bug?

    @Marc: As noted several times above, KB915865 is an update to XMLLite, a DLL used by IE7's tabs.

    @Elmario: If you start IE in the No Addons mode (START>Programs>Accessories>SystemTools), does the 100% cpu problem persist?

    Re: John Dibble's posts (on April 25) and other posts in this and other IE blog pages, about IE7's user interface being "all over the place" and too different from IE6 and not tailorable enough ...

    While there certainly are some rather nice touches to the new UI. on the whole I concur with these critics it's too different from what browser users expect to use (and even a bit quirky in a few respects). It's going to lead to a totally unnecessary learning curve when released for general consumption.

    I reckon that it's like an automobile manufacturer coming out with a new model and saying "Hey, folks, we've moved some of the controls around, but it won't matter, we know what's best for you. You'll love the accelerator pedal being on the left of the  brake pedal, and the fixed-position seats, once you get used to them!"

    One thing that seems to have changed for the better since the January 2006 beta version (whicj by the way I thought was the second beta, so why is the April beta called "Beta 2"). It's something I and a few others whinged about, so maybe our complaints were heard and remedied: with htis new beta, you can use Ctrl+Shift+Mouswheel to scroll the Text Size setting (through the five steps, from Smallest to Largest). Hooray for that!

    Since I don't like the native IE7 interface very much at all -- due to "dog's breakfast" layout and too many features that are "par for the course (in 2006)" missing (such as multi-row tabs, tabs at bottom, drag-and-drop tabs, etc, etc) -- I've moved back to my favorite interface, Avant Browser, and for me it works just fine with the IE7 Beta2 engine underlying it, and I get to use all those productivity features missing from IE7, so there's hope yet.

    The IE architects reall do need to take an inventory and implement the "best if breed" productivity features in the other browsers (Avant, Enigma, Maxthon, Slimbrowser, Netcaptor, Opera, and not to forget the dreaded Firefox -- I've tested them all, and even use them sometimes for their special features).

    Okay, don't listen to a grumpy old fogey like me with more than three and a half decades in the IT industry, and a keen interest in all aspects of usability and efficacy: just steam on ahead, and deliver your less than outstanding user experience ...

    @DavidU: The root cause of this is believed to be a bug in earlier builds of IE7.  Did you have one installed before?

    In any case, the problem should go away (and never reappear) if you clear your history.

    Our site is broken on CSS fixed right anchoring (right:0 left:auto) with IE7 beta 2.

    There is apparently a problem with the positioning computation.

    The problem is the same if we apply the "fixed IE fix" we used on previous version of IE that dynamically compute the right positioning.

    Visually, the problem is simple : the right band on the site should be on the right of the page but it is not :( It is shifted from 10ns of pixel to the left !!! Strange behaviour that need ti be fixed before the final version is out.

    I'm still suffering by the 100% CPU problem. It doesn't matter if I have installed the Internet Explorer Developer Toolbar or not (btw, I can't recognize any difference in the way of look with or without the toolbar). How can I get run IE7 with performance?

    @Ondrej: Your build is corrupt.  You likely have the IE7 Frame DLL and the rest of the IE6 binaries. Please use the bug database to file a bug and attach the .log files from C:windows.

    I really hope that we can have a standalone mode (not that compromised batch file which doesn't work for me...). I know IE7 may break old HTML codes, and I don't mind because I'm so glad that IE is keep improving, but being a web developer I'm really disappointed that I have no choice running both version on my machine. I know some people talked about "why don't use VM/VPC" but hey, why technology advance gives us more trouble, not making our lives easier and happier?

    I can't add photos to my albums in MSN spaces. When I open an album in edit mode, the add photos, delete photos etc. links are disabled. Also, it does not show me thumbnails of existing photos in the album.

    It works fine on my friend's PC who is using IE6.

    I'm just an everyday user of the internet and am wondering if I should install IE7b2.  I know little about this stuff, but it doesn't hurt to keep up with the latest and greatest!  So, is IE7b2 right for me?  Do I just download it, or will I then need to uninstall the current IE?  Thanks for humoring a helpless surfer.
