Q. How do I create a new project at the root of my websever?

A. In the New Project dialog, you should not choose the “ASP.NET Web Application“ template, but rather the “New Project In Existing Folder“ template and give it some name (this is used to name your solution file). Then type in “https://localhost“ in the dialog that comes up. Omar Khan talks about this very thing in the following MSDN TV article.
