Installation Options
Microsoft Windows XP Embedded can be installed and configured for use in a team environment, or it can be installed on a single computer. In a team environment, you typically install the component database on a shared server that everyone on the team can use, and team members install only the development tools on their individual computers. In the single-computer environment, you install the development tools and component database on the same computer.
Windows XP Embedded Service Pack 2 Feature Pack 2007 installation requires Windows Installer 3.1, except for installations on Windows Vista systems. If necessary, run the Windows XP Embedded SP2 Feature Pack 2007 setup and choose Windows Installer 3.1 to install this update on your system. Please note Windows Installer 3.1 is not required on Windows Vista machines. Attempting to install Windows Installer 3.1 on Windows Vista results in an error.
Note Each Windows XP Embedded Toolkit License allows you to install one copy of the Windows Embedded Studio development tools, and one copy of the component database and Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE). With a single Windows® XP Embedded Toolkit License, you can install all of these on the same computer, or you can install the development tools on one computer, and the component database and MSDE on another computer. In a team environment, you must purchase an additional Windows® XP Embedded Toolkit License for each computer on which you install the Windows® Embedded Studio for Windows XP Embedded development tools - that is one toolkit license for each computer you use for developing or building images.
Note When installing the component database on Windows Vista machine, do not install MSDE. Please download the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition from https://msdn.microsoft.com/sql/express/ and follow the installation instructions in the download.
Development tools setup includes:
- Component Designer, for authoring components.
- Target Designer, for authoring configurations and building embedded operating system run-time images.
- Component Database Manager, for managing the component database.
- Additional utilities and command-line tools.
- Product documentation.
Database installation includes:
- Microsoft SQL Desktop Engine (MSDE). This enables the development tools to access the component database. Do not install MSDE on Windows Vista machines.
- The component database. This contains platforms, components, repositories, resource types and groups that you can include in a configuration.
The following table shows the installation options.
Installation option | Description |
---|---|
Development tools only
(Typical team environment) |
Creates a development system that connects to a shared component database, which enables multiple users to use a common component database and repositories. It requires fewer resources than a stand-alone configuration.
To install the development tools, see Installing the Development Tools Update. During installation, you specify the component database server. Only the development tools are installed on your computer. The development tools must have a connection to a component database server at all times. |
Shared component database
(Typical team environment) |
Creates a development system in which the component database and repositories are installed on a shared server.
To install a shared component database for a team environment, see Installing the Component Database Update. |
Development tools and component database on a single computer
(Typical single user environment) |
Creates a development system that contains the tools and component database. The development tools and the software required to build a Windows XP Embedded run-time image are located on the same computer.
To install the development tools and component database, see Installing the Development Tools Update and Installing the Component Database Update. Except for Windows Vista systems, this configuration requires installation of SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE), which is furnished on the Windows XP Embedded installation media. When installing the component database on Windows Vista machine, do not install MSDE. Please download the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition from https://msdn.microsoft.com/sql/express/ and follow the installation instructions in the download. |
Note Dual installations of the database are not supported, whether they are on the same or different drives or partitions.
