Client operating systems

This section describes several operating system issues regarding clients for policy.

  • Windows Server 2003 family

    Group Policy fully supports client computers that run Windows Server 2003 operating systems. These servers can either be ordinary member servers of Active Directory or domain controllers. Group Policy fully supports both types of computers.

  • Windows 2000 Server

    Computers that run Windows 2000 Server can either be ordinary member servers of Active Directory or domain controllers. Group Policy fully supports both types of computers.

  • Windows XP Professional and Windows 2000 Professional

    Group Policy fully supports client computers that run Windows XP Professional, Windows XP 64-bit Edition (Itanium) and Windows 2000 Professional.

  • Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Millennium Edition

    It is recommended that Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows Millennium Edition clients run System Policy Editor (Poledit.exe) on the local computer. This ensures that the Config.pol file that is created is compatible with those operating systems. Copy the resultant Config.pol file to the SysVol folder of the domain controller. Group Policy does not apply.

  • Windows NT 4.0 Workstation and Windows NT 4.0 Server

    These clients continue to be fully supported by Windows NT 4.0 System Policy. You can use System Policy Editor (Poledit.exe) to write Windows NT 4.0 .adm files. System Policy Editor can be obtained from a Windows NT 4.0 CD. Windows NT 4.0 does not use Active Directory. Because computers that run Windows NT 4.0 do not have local Group Policy objects, Group Policy does not apply. For more information, see Local Group Policy.

  • Windows XP Home Edition, Windows NT 3.51, Windows 3.1, and MS-DOS

    Group Policy does not apply to these operating systems.
