Category hierarchy (form)
Applies To: Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3, Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2, Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 Feature Pack, Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012
Click Product information management > Setup > Categories > Category hierarchies. On the Action Pane, click Category hierarchy. Enter a unique name and an optional description in the form, and then click Create.
Use this form to create a category hierarchy to classify products, vendors, or other data. You can import categories or commodity codes from a standard industry classification system, or you can manually create a category hierarchy to meet the business requirements for your organization.

General |
View the name, friendly name, status, and other details about the category. |
Category attributes |
Define characteristics of a category, such as the name of the person who is responsible for managing the category. |
Commodity codes |
Add imported commodity codes to the category. For more information about importing commodity codes, see Import categories (form). |
Category pages |
Create a page that contains information about the category, such as announcements and guidelines. You can display the category page in an internal procurement catalog on your employee self-service portal and on a purchase requisition line. |
Assign project categories |
Specify the default project category for the selected procurement category. Note The Assign project categories FastTab is available only for procurement and sales category hierarchy types. For more information about category hierarchy types, see Category hierarchy types (form). |
Category attribute groups |
Assign attribute groups to a selected category. This FastTab is available only if the category hierarchy is assigned to one of the following category hierarchy types:

Inactivate |
Make the category unavailable for transactions. |
Activate |
Make the category available for transactions. |
Delete |
Delete the category from the hierarchy. You can delete a category only if there are no records that reference the category. |
New category node |
Add a subcategory to the category hierarchy. In the left pane, select a category to add subcategories to, and then click New category node. Important The first category that you create for a new category hierarchy is always the parent category of all other categories in the hierarchy. |
Translations |
Open the Text translation form, where you can translate the name and content of the category page into another language. |
Categories from file |
Open the Import categories form. For more information, see Import categories (form). Note All imported categories become subcategories immediately below the top level in the procurement category hierarchy. |

Add an attribute to a category. |
Remove |
Remove an attribute from a category. |
Edit HTML content |
Open the Editor form, where you can view or modify a category page. |

Open the Category attribute groups form, where you can select the attribute groups to assign to the selected category. This button is displayed only if the category hierarchy is assigned to one of the following category hierarchy types:

View attributes |
Open the Attribute groups form, where you can view the list of product attributes that are assigned to the selected attribute group. You can also add or remove attributes from the attribute group. This button is displayed only if the category hierarchy is assigned to one of the following category hierarchy types:

Code |
Assign an optional commodity code number to the category. |
Active |
Indicates whether the category is available for transactions. |
Import status |
Indicates whether the category was imported from a commodity code hierarchy. |
Created date |
The date on which the category was created. |
Modified date |
The most recent date on which the category was changed. |
Classify as tangible product |
Select this check box to indicate that products assigned to the category are for tangible products only, not for services. |
Default category threshold |
Enter the amount to use for new threshold keys for the selected category. This amount is entered as the default threshold amount when you create a purchasing policy by using the Spending thresholds by category policy rule. Note This control is available only if the following conditions are met:
In versions of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 prior to cumulative update 7, only the Public Sector configuration key must be selected, but the primary address of the legal entity must be in France. |
Description |
Enter a description of the category that helps other employees understand the purpose of the category. |
Friendly name |
Enter an optional name to use in your organization. The friendly name can be translated. |
Keywords |
Enter words to help identify this category in a search of category names in Enterprise Portal for Microsoft Dynamics AX. |
Data type |
The format of data for the selected attribute. For example, the data type for a name is Text. |
Inherited from |
The name of the category from which the category attributes are inherited. |
Inherit category attributes from parent category: |
Select this check box to assign the same attributes to a category that you assign to the parent of the category. |
Hierarchy name |
The name of the standard industry commodity code system from which you imported the commodity code. |
