Installing Visual FoxPro

You can install Visual FoxPro from CD-ROM or a network to a local hard drive. You cannot install Visual FoxPro to a mapped drive.

**Note   **If you use a virus protection program on your computer, override it or turn it off before running the Installation Wizard. The Installation Wizard might not run properly with virus protection turned on. After installation, be sure to restart your virus protection program.

Requirements for Installation

You can install Visual FoxPro on computers running Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT 4.0, or Windows 2000 or later operating systems.

Minimum hardware requirements are:

  • An IBM-compatible computer with a Pentium processor.
  • A mouse or pointing devise.
  • 64 MB RAM (recommended: 128 MB or higher)
  • Diskspace for Visual FoxPro: 115 MB for a minimum installation, 200 MB for the maximum installation.
  • Diskspace for the Windows Component Update: depends on the Operating System but typically might require 50 MB.

Installing Visual FoxPro

There is no preparation required before installing Visual FoxPro. You might want to configure a Windows 2000 or Windows NT 4.0 or later Server computer with Internet Information Server (IIS) if you plan to use Visual FoxPro for publishing Web Services (refer to your operating system documentation for instructions on setting up and configuring IIS).

To install Visual FoxPro from CD-ROM

  1. Insert the Visual FoxPro CD, and launch the Installation wizard (Setup.exe).
  2. Insert the Windows Component Update CD, and install the Windows Component Update. Depending on the operating system you are using, your computer might restart several times. Click Done to return to the Installation wizard.
  3. Click Install Visual FoxPro.
  4. From the feature list in the wizard, select all of the tools you want to install.
  5. Click Install Now! to continue with Setup.

Full installation includes all Visual FoxPro program files, online help, and samples files.

Installation Troubleshooting

If you can't run Visual FoxPro and don't see error messages telling you what's wrong, the problem might lie in your computer's ROM BIOS or the video driver you're using.

If you're using an extended keyboard, be sure that the ROM BIOS is compatible with it. In addition, be sure that you're using a standard VGA or Super VGA Windows video driver.

If you get a "stack overflow" error message, your video driver is out of date or not designed for your video card. To correct this problem, update the video driver.

For additional information, see the Visual FoxPro Readme at the root of the Visual FoxPro installation CD.
