Ubuntu & Linux: Sound Issues in Chrome

The steps below may resolve sound issues if the error is related to the the online classroom. However, we also recommend discussing a back up platform in the event that you have trouble connecting through your primary video platform choice. Some popular options include Skype, Google Hangouts, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams.

  1. If you're using Ubuntu in Linux, known issues between Chrome and Ubuntu may be the cause of your audio issues.  One way to fix this problem is to "force" the sound to "restart" after your initial installation of Chrome.

  2. After your initial installation of Chrome, open your terminal and enter the following code:

    sudo apt-get remove --purge alsa-base pulseaudio indicator-sound
    sudo apt-get install alsa-base pulseaudio indicator-sound
    sudo alsa force-reload
