Favorite Posts of Week 33

My collection of favorite blog posts from last week in no particular order.

  1. Technical Books for Multi-Core Software Developers on the Intel (r) Software Network. A great collection of books on multithreaded application development and parallel programming. My personal favorite is the 4 pager at the very end of the list: Twelve Ways to Fool the Masses When giving Performance Results on Parallel Computers, David H. Bailey, Supercomputing Review, Aug. 1991, pp. 54-55.
  2. Nuts and Bolts of Multithreaded Programming. Ok, I cheat, this post is from July. Nevertheless, another great source of information on "... parallel algorithms, parallel programming APIs, and the tools required to start writing your own parallel programs." Again on the Intel Software Community portal. Intel also provides a direct feed for their multi core related blog posts.
  3. Top 10 Usability Highs Of Mac OS on Smashing Magazine. Juul Coolen " ... take(s) a look at some of the spots where Apple really has done it better in terms of user interface and usability." Hmm, don't know but see for yourself. Juul claims to be a Windows power user for years having transitioned to the Mac.
  4. What is Cloud Computing, Anyway? by Irving Wladawsky-Berger on his personal blog. I follow his posts for quite a while now and find them moist interesting to read and almost always very informative. In this post and a previous he gives some insight into what Cloud computing is, put it in historical context and explains why cloud computing is an evolutionary step offering great opportunities - if we don't get impatient and do it right.
  5. How to Survive the Multicore Software Revolution (or at Least Survive the Hype) . A free eBook from Cilk Arts. Nicely done and a very good manual to get you started on multicore why, when and how. And of course they're selling their technology, too. Ilya, thanks for the email.

More favorites next week.
