Windows 10 Creator Update Troublehooting: Start Button, Start Menu not working

Scenario

  • When you are clicking Start menu it is not responding.
  • When you are clicking Windows button on your keyboard and nothing is happening.
  • If you are trying to open Start menu by clicking Win+X keys, no Start menu is appearing.

Why is it happening?

It may happen if ShellExperienceHost.exe, SearchUI.exe  stops responding or malfunctioning. These are associated with controlling of Start, Search or Taskbar. If they malfunction, then notifications, Microsoft Edge, Windows 10 apps including Settings, volume, WiFi, battery icons will also stop responding along with Start or Start menu.

How to Fix:

  • Insert a Windows 10 installation media (DVD or a USB drive). If you don't have an installation media then you can download the ISO and prepare an installation media
  • From the Windows Setup screen, tap or click Next
  • Tap or click on the Repair your computer
  • In the Advanced Startup, click Troubleshoot > Advanced options
  • Select Command Prompt
  • In Command Prompt copy-paste the following command:

         Get-AppxPackage -allusers | foreach {Add-AppxPackage -register "$($_.InstallLocation)\appxmanifest.xml" -DisableDevelopmentMode}

  • Now restart and recheck
