Scenario:
We are using Windows 10 Insider Preview Build #16251 and we are a Fast Ring user. Found Insider Preview Build #16257 started downloading but it never got updated to #16257 and again it switched back to #16251.
How To Fix :
- If you’re having problems with Windows Update, make sure you're connected to the Internet and then download and run the Windows Update Troubleshooter .
- If the above doesn’t fix the issue then try the following:
- Type msconfig in Start Search box and hit the Enter key. Put a check mark against Safe boot under the Boot tab.
- Click OK or Apply.
- Reboot your system.
- Boot into Safe mode.
- Now locate C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution
- Select all the contents under SoftwareDistribution and delete them.
- Once again type msconfig in Start Search box and this time uncheck the box against Safe boot under the Boot tab.
- Reboot
- Click Settings
- Click Update & Security and now try to update to #16257.
Advantages of the above process:
- You don't need to stop or start Windows Update process via elevated cmd using the following commands:
net stop wuauserv
net start wuauserv
- As you are using Safe Mode there is no need to take ownership rights for SoftwareDistribution folder separately.
