Azure Virtual Machine Backup
Introduction
We have talked about many issues about Microsoft Azure Backup. You can find the topics below. This series of articles will consist of 2 parts. In Part 1, we will see how to back up virtual machines on Microsoft Azure on Azure, and in Part 2, we will see how to restore a virtual machine that we backed up.
Description
If we recall the titles shown above, we have mentioned the Microsoft Azure Backup pricing issue, and how to back up the folders and files we determined by installing Azure Backup Agent on our physical client device and how to restore these backed items in case of a problem. In this article, we will talk about how to back up a virtual machine on Azure. If we talk about the scenario, we have a virtual machine on azure and we will back up this virtual machine. I will mention the requirements and reminders later in our article, which cannot be a complicated scenario that you can understand. We will see together what we will pay attention to while performing the application. Now let's start our application if you want.
Steps by Step
First, let's log in to the Azure Portal and follow the steps below.
- Click on the New (+) button.
- Select Storage from the menu that opens .
- Just then Backup and Recovery Sites (OMS) Then click on.
- Let's fill in the Recovery Services Vault section that opens.
Location: Since my virtual machine is located on North Europe as a location, I am locating my backup service on North Europe in the same way.
Let's create our Azure Backup service by clicking the Create button.
Our Azure Service has begun to emerge.
Now we will go to the Azure Backup service we created. For this, let's follow the steps below.
- Now think recur Let group.
- From the menu that opens, I go to the resource group where I created the Azure backup service.
- Right after that, I click on the Azure Virtual Machines Backup service that I created.
Note: You can go from within the virtual machine without applying these steps, but I am trying to describe it in long ways in order to be familiar with the New Azure Portal.
Now, let's follow the steps below. Here, we will make small configurations for the virtual machine we want to back up.
- Let's click on Backup from the menu that opens .
- From the menu that opens (1), we click the first step.
- When we come to the Backup Goal menu;
- Where is your workload running? We choose the Azure option because we have virtual machines running on Azure .
- What do you want to back up? For the problem, we choose the Virtual Machine option.
In the second step, we need to set a backup policy
If you want, you can create a new policy with the Create New option.
When you want to create a new policy, you will see the screen above. Since I will proceed on the default policy, I proceed by selecting the Default Policy option. In the meantime, I recommend that you create a new Backup Policy. Keep everything under your control, otherwise your virtual machine will be backed up in the time zone determined by Microsoft Azure.
Note: With Azure Iaas VM Backup , you can backup once a day. Details can be found here.
When we come to the last third step, we will choose the virtual machines we want to back up. Since I have only one virtual machine in this region, I select my machine named VM01 and click the OK button.
After completing all the steps, let's press the OK button.
Our backup service started to be deployed. You don't need to go to the virtual machine and install any agents or services, Azure will do all of these for you.
Have any backup taken by going to my Backup service now? Let's check it out. After coming to our backup service, let's go to the Backup items menu. Let's click Azure Virtual Machine from the menu that opens
We can see that the first backup is pending. When we come to the restore point section, no backup is taken. This is due to my default policy. Because my backup process will start the next day.
Now I will start the manual backup from the page above. In the Backup Now window, it is the date until the backup taken. Let's click on the backup button now .
Our backup process started to be triggered.
Again, when we look at the backup items window, we can see that the virtual machine has been successfully backed up. Click on the last 7 days restore point. Also, we can see the last restore point on this screen.
We can see that our backup has been successfully taken.
Again, we can see that the backup has been successfully performed from the backed up items.
Note
When I check the backups taken a few days later, we can see that our backups are performed regularly every day. The subject of our next article will be to restore the virtual machine backup we have received. Let's see if the virtual machine we restored has been backed up successfully.
See you in 2nd article of how to restore virtual machines .......
