Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Hi folks, welcome to the chat!

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
We're just getting up and running, but feel free to get the questions flowing

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Hopefully you guys are using a lot of our multi-PC features like Printer Sharing :)

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: my outlook is responding differently since i downloaded the beta. any connection?
A: Not sure - we'd need more information. Have you submitted a bug yet? https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard\_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: does printer sharing actually work outside of our local network say using Windows live onecare to connect printers over the internet
A: Unfortunately, no. That would be cool though, huh?

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Hi folks, make sure you are posting formal questions rather than just chatting in Live Chat. It's much easier to manage our questions from that side

Terrence (Expert):
Q: I want to thank you for putting on the front page of OneCare when the subscription expires; this is a great feature, and something I have been asking for. Thank you
A: I'm glad you like it. We got similar feedback from others. We are definitely listening :)

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: Any chance to have MSDE/MS SQL Express backup in OneCare since home app use it like MS Accounting (For home/office users) and other apps?
A: Not likely soon. It is technically more of a development/small biz app than a home consumer app.

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: Is there a way to download and install the Virus Def files, without using the OC interface? I have several customers that are on dialup, and they never get to updates.
A: No there isn't. What problems are your dialup customers having with updates? Our signature sizes are relatively small.

ScottHoo (Expert):
Q: When a virus is found when the user is browsing the web, can or does OneCare send the website that the virus came from? If not, could this be a feature the user can opt-in, so OC can inform users what sites have viruses on them?
A: No, for most viruses we unfortunately do not know the source (in addition to the fact that they often come from many sources). However, in the case of Phishing websites, we do detect suspicious sites (through IE7) and submit them to be added to the known Phishing list.

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: In OneCare 2.0 when I try and backup files on my computer, it does not allow me to easily include a folder to backup. Even to go or change the backup process, is a lot longer than 1.6 was. Will this be changed in a later build?
A: We've definitely received some feedback about backup dialogs and are working to make things easier. Have you posted your thoughts about this on the forums? What specifically would you like to see different?

Terrence (Expert):
Q: When can we expect some new localizations (like Polish)? Nowadays installation is impossible (oh - possible but not fully legal) ;) That is because compatibility issues... But don't you think that the only information about danger would be better?
A: we have no news to report about when OneCare will be available in some other markets. We work hard to try and make it available in as many markets and languages as possible but as of right now, have no new announcements.

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: Is there or will there be a way to manually do tuneups & backups on a circle computer from the hub computer?
A: Unfortunately, no.

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: Is there a way to configure the OneCare backup to utilize the Windows Home Server backup facility? All machines are currently being backed up on a daily basis by WHS. I don't really want another OneCare method.
A: Unfortunately, no. We're working with the WHS team to have a "better together" story, but for now they are different technologies.

Terrence (Expert):
Q: Can a circle extend to include remote systems or do they need to be on the local LAN?
A: the Circle does work outside of the Local Lan, albeit with more limited functionality.

ScottHoo (Expert):
Q: Will OneCare show the data at this site https://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/resources.aspx , top viruses, etc. in the main UI?
A: No, currently there are no plans to add this information to the main UI. However, it is definitely a good suggestion for the future. Can you file on a bug on this? https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard\_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: My #1 problem while using OC 2.0 is that on 50%+ of my restarts, I am getting an error message that Windows AutoUpdate is disabled and I should re-enable it. Has anyone else seen this? If this is from a Virus, if so could OC tell us whic one?
A: My guess is that this is due to a virus. We see behavior like this from many classes of viruses. I recommend doing a full system scan with OneCare.

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: Okay, well then will Onecare detect our already established printer share?
A: Yes

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: I am having the same problem freezing on vista ultimate wireless laptop with wloc 2.0 I think I will have to do a fresh install again also on the Vista business edition WLOC 2 becomes very unstabled
A: Can you give more info here? What does "freezing" and "unstable" mean specifically? Also, have you filed a bug on this? https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard\_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US

Terrence (Expert):
Q: I have Windows Vista Ultimate. If I use the backup from it, is there any way to turn off OneCare backup or at least make OneCare not show the dashboard to users with a yellow status?
A: you can disable the OneCare backup from the settings menu. Doing this will remove the yellow status from your main UI.

ScottHoo (Expert):
Q: Can we please fix the automatic tuneup performance? It still takes hours to complete, which was the same for 1.0,1.5,1.6 and now 2.0!
A: Most likely these performance issues are due to the Anti-malware scan looking at a large number of archive (.zip, .pst, etc.) files. We are working to fix this in our next release.

ScottHoo (Expert):
Q: I noticed that Windows Defender was disabled. I re-enabled it. Does OneCare disable Defender? Should I enable it or leave it off?
A: OneCare includes the current version of Windows Defender. In your case, feel free to leave it enabled.

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: I have a Windows Vista x64 machine and a Vista 32 bit machine in my OneCare circle. Both machines have multiple user accounts. When users log in, they see sometimes get the OneCare dashboard (on the hub machine) at startup. ...
A: Go on...I'm on the edge of my seat

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: Are there plans to make more options for Backup? I used to do backups in WindowsXP with partial backups through the week and a full backup on the weekend. I would save each weekend and overwrite it on a monthly basis. lans to allow more control?
A: What options would you like to see? You can do both full and diff backups with OneCare and have a lot of control over scheduling.

Mona (Expert):
Q: the whole multi management ui seems to be a bit confusing right now, for example we all use non activated accounts.... multiple pc all show the not activated message... should there be a "circle" wide issue section for this?
A: that's a great suggestion - we're working on seeing how we can aggregate messages that apply to all PCs in a circle - however this seems to be something we'll fix soon after our next version release.

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: #2 issue is on most/every return from sleep/hibernate, I get error messages that my network is public, then it tells me that the network is HOME. Why does it do this? Is there any way to disable the specific notifications?
A: Ah yes - we've seen a lot of feedback on this. Part of this is a bug that will be fixed with our next refresh. Another part is pseudo by design, as when you initially connect to a network we classify it as public (safest) while we are detecting whether it is known or not

Mona (Expert):
Q: I have seen a mythical computer on the network too... its a "copy" of my vista machine that has v2 installed. it does not happen with an xp machine that has v2....
A: Not sure I understand what a mythical computer means - are you seeing a duplicate entry in your Hub PC for another PC?

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: . Is there any way to make this not show up when they log in? I think it appears when the backup fails from the pervious night.
A: Sorry, to make what not show up?

ScottHoo (Expert):
Q: I have a wireless router but it is wired to the computer on wich OneCare is installed, I cannot see or access the wireless network security in oneCare, is it normal?
A: Hello Jeff, there are a couple of pre-qualifications that are necessary for us to provide management of the wireless security settings of your network. Namely, we must support the router you're using, the network must be classified as "Home or Work", and your network must be unsecured. If you meet the all of the criteria and you want to check whether your router is supported, feel free to send me the model number and I will look it up for you (the web page with this information is still in development)

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: I have a Windows Vista x64 machine and a Vista 32 bit machine in my OneCare circle. Both machines are unable to do backups to my NAS device. ...
A: Uh oh. Have you filed a bug on this? What specifically happens?

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: why is the settings interface so cluttered? with all these different types of dialogues and screens, and sub menus, and popups and so on?
A: Uh...well...we try to make it not look cluttered. Do you think it is worse or better in v2?

ScottHoo (Expert):
Q: how come the program doesn't open when the system tray icon is double clicked? this is just annoying
A: It does take 20 seconds or so for our UI to boot, however, if it is not appearing you should definitely open a bug: https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard\_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: Any chance we will see One Care doing a more thourough cleanup on the system, ie deleting temp files and other "junk" that makes its way onto the PC?
A: Yes! You have the option to do disk cleanup today, but we're moving to do this by default in v2

Mona (Expert):
Q: What's up with OC creating mythical/virtual "computers" on the network.. like "OC0624932714523" for instance?
A: Not sure I understand - are you seeing a computer in your OneCare circle that isnt actually there or wasnt named by you? Are you sure this is not a printer?

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: Basically, they can see the device and run the backup as long as I am logged in; however, I get an error when they run in a scheduled fashion that says the network device is unavailable. ...
A: Hmm...could be the way the share is setup, or a bug in OneCare. Can you file a bug on this please? https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard\_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US

Mona (Expert):
Q: The mythical or virtual computer entries referred to are listed in the Network window. I assume they were created by OC since they showed up when it was installed, and their 'name' begins with "OC" followed by a long number..
A: do you have a printer shared through OneCare? I believe our printer sharing does create a printer entity and gives it a pre-defined name. We are working on making this name more user friendly

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: I have tried to change the credentials, but that doesn’t seem to work. I am referencing the device with it’s network address like \\device\backups. This has worked for me in the past backing up the PCs with WindowsXP. Any ideas how to resolve this?
A: This may be due to a bug in our product that we'll be fixing this week. Try again on Friday and please file a bug if it is still happening

Mona (Expert):
Q: Do you plan OneCare for Windows Mobile or sth like that?
A: Good question - we dont have plans for windows mobile at the moment.

ScottHoo (Expert):
Q: When will OneCare be able to detect and remove all the viruses and spyware out there? Today I found two viruses on my PC and one adware program which was found by running the online scan of bitdefender and that removed them. Onecare said my pc was clean.
A: We are continuously working on our response and detection rates and have recently moved into the top in the industry (with the likes of Symantec, McAfee, etc.).

Terrence (Expert):
Q: When are you planning to release OneCare v2.0?
A: we have no official launch date to announce.

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: what about the wave 2 ui? all other apps seem to get it and the webpages are going to get updated too (see spaces) but v2 is stuck at flair?
A: We're on a different train than the rest of Live evan - OC Beta Team (Moderator):Q: Are you going to renew subscriptions for OneCare beta testers again?
A: The OneCare Beta (v2.0) is a free-trial beta and doesn't require a subscription. However, in order to see all the features it is recommended that you open OneCare, click OneCare circle, and sign-in with your Windows Live ID on all your machines using OneCare.

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: isn't the v2 release the right timing to get some background stuff right? the windows live wave 2 apps install into c:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger eg... oc still uses c:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows OneCare Live (not even the final name)
A: What's the customer impact of this?

Mona (Expert):
Q: so that is OneCare that created my OC5251003725067 entry in my network??? I was wondering what that was.. ????
A: Yes that would be OneCare - if you've shared a printer with OneCare, we do create this object - we are working on fixing it to have a more user friendly name so you can identify that this entity is actually your shared printer

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: I tried Online photo backup last night and found the online backup tool sends every image on my hard drive to the server, including temp images from web browsing, are you thinking about putting a priority on the " My picture folder" ?
A: That shouldn't happen. Have you filed a bug on this? https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard\_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US

ScottHoo (Expert):
Q: Have you improved virus protection in 2.0? In the past it's been reported to not detect all viruses.
A: We are continuously working on our response and detection rates and have recently moved into the top in the industry (with the likes of Symantec, McAfee, etc.).

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: I have an 2 XP machines. I was wondering if there were anything in the works to add the agreement message that you see in Vista into OneCare for XP users when they install new programs?
A: not sure exactly what you are referring to

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: how come when right clicking the system tray icon the context menu loads up in the top left corner of the screen? and how come when it sometimes loads in the system, it loads a couple inches away from the actual icon?
A: Hmm...that shouldn't happen. Do you have a multi-monitor configuration?

ScottHoo (Expert):
Q: one thing WLOC 2.0 is fouling up the wireless - on public or private it jumps from one to the next - I have wep--
A: This is most likely due to the firewall, can you file a bug on this? https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard\_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: more about Polish lang: so it is possible to get version without system language checker? It is important to me... I know that English version works fine on Polish version of operating system...
A:https://get.live.com/betas/onecare_betas

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: I have Beta installed on SBS 2003 clients and it doesn't recognise that updates are policy driven via WUS. Does this have implications for home server? Why can't I tell OneCare that I don't need updates to be monitored?
A: OneCare has some work to do to make sense for WHS and SBS

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: anyway to defrag up just c: , onecare keeps defragging my backup drive f:
A: Unfortunately, no, but thanks for the suggestion.

ScottHoo (Expert):
Q: I was sent a link to install the software and but did not get any action issue to activate or secure my wireless network I sent a bug and my version is 2.0.2284.22. what maybe the proble and are u guys aware of this?
A: There are a couple of pre-qualifications that are necessary for us to provide management of the wireless security settings of your network. Namely, we must support the router you're using, the network must be classified as "Home or Work", and your network must be unsecured. If you meet the all of the criteria and you want to check whether your router is supported, feel free to send me the model number and I will look it up for you (the web page with this information is still in development)

Mona (Expert):
Q: Will the cost of OneCare v2.0 be changing from the current cost?
A: no there are no plans for price changes. Our current users will be able to get the new version (as a part of their regular service upgrade) and new users will be able to get it at our original annual subscription price.

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q:Q:[12],Not sure where the problem is. He is using AOL, and the program does not update. Not sure if it is a program update. He is still on 1.5, and it would take him to long to uninstall and redownload and install. Any ideas? I have tried the OC Cleanup
A: I'd have to know more about what's going on. If it was an update failure that would be one thing, however if his connection was really really slow and he didn't stay online long enough to download the signature updates that would be a separate issue.

Terrence (Expert):
Q: Will the cost of OneCare v2.0 be changing from the current cost?
A: OneCare is a subscription. You could buy it anytime between now and the launch of V2 and be assured of always having the latest OneCare client available. We have no news on any pricing changes.

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: Will OneCare 2.0 have the ability to utilize a third-party defragmentation program, such as PerfectDisk, instead of the built-in Diskkeeper Lite? The Tune-Up function invokes its defrag, but always receive a process cannot complete error on each partition.
A: Unfortunately, no. What do you like more about other defrag tools such as PerfectDisk?

Mona (Expert):
Q: I do not have Printer share enabled, and I am getting the Phantom Machiens that are being discussed..
A: ah yes - this can be happening in 2 cases (we're setting up a file share for you for printer sharing or for using centralized backup). We are working on coming up with a friendly name for these network entities we create so users can tell if its their shared printer or backup share.

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: There have been an increase of ActiveX alerts on IE7 since I installed OneCare 2.0beta, any reason why?
A: Should have no correlation whatsoever. have you filed a bug on this?

ScottHoo (Expert):
Q: stats say that onecare onli detects approx. 85% of malware, when will onecare actually reach average stats like 92-96%
A: We are continuously working on our response and detection rates and have recently moved into the top in the industry (with the likes of Symantec, McAfee, etc.).

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: I would like to see a better system WLOC in configuring each partition in scanning if you have two OS's that you could regulate which and when to scan instead of it doing the whole computer -- I have 2 wloc one for each OS
A: You're basically asking for the ability to exclude files and folders from scanning. Thanks for the suggestion.

ScottHoo (Expert):
Q: Is there a reason that the tuneup (anti-virus) function scans a .PST file since it cannot (fortunately) quarrantine any mis-perceived malware in attachments?
A: We are actually working on updating this behavior and you should see changes in this area in the next release

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: Been having problems sharing printer, printer port is usb virtual printer port. Would this prevent sharing the printer?
A: Potentially - we treat virtual printer ports differently. We absolutely are dying for feedback on printer sharing, though - can you pretty please file a bug on this? https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard\_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US

ScottHoo (Expert):
Q: When Scan Report displays a Quarantine Falure - Why Can't I Find the reported problem item or take any action on the reported item?
A: We are in the middle of improving this experience--watch for changes in the next release

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: WLOC is kicking the living day lights of the new beta messenger
A: What does that mean?

ScottHoo (Expert):
Q: are there plans to add a registry cleaner feature to onecare?
A: We've investigated this and actually believe there are not significant customer advantages to this functionality. As such, we are currently not considering adding this functionality.

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: OneCare wont download any updates so its RED. I have followed the Help & Support steps but nothing seems to be working. What should I do?
A: Have you contacted support directly? They should be able to help you https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=90666

ScottHoo (Expert):
Q: "mythical computer" means that in network I have my vista machine listed as "vistatest" (the actual name) and a second time as "OC124323472983" (something like this). I can access the same shares with both entries. they are both visible from other machines
A: Hello Gregor, not sure if I fully understand the issue, are you saying that the Network name or machine name has changed? OneCare will update the wireless network name (SSID) if it secures the wireless network

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: the agreement message he is referring to is Vista's UAC
A: No, we aren't planning to backport UAC to XP

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: Do you guys plan on toning down the amount of pop up messages that OC gives? I find it quite annoying everytime I get a message that tells me that OC has allowed IE or outlook to connect to the internet.
A: Yes - this is a bug we plan on fixing in our next release.

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: PLEASE do not make "Clean up disk" default. That function ALWAYS breaks at least 1 app on my machine when I have enabled it in MSFT products in the past!!!!
A: What apps of yours break?

ScottHoo (Expert):
Q: My machine also has never been able to successfully complete a OneCare disk tune-up. I always get an error message that it was unable to complete
A: Can you file a bug on this? https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard\_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: the settings UI in v2 is worse in my opinion - more options... I am not saying to get rid of them but right now there is no realy standardized UI for them each popup seems to have its on style, sometimes even a different font or at least font size a lot of the settings require more clicks than they should. for example the new network settings were you can enable share access and so on. I wish I could just click on the green status led to turn it on or off. instead I have to click the arrow to get more options... chose the settings (there are always two - on and off - so no need for this) and click apply. even if you do not enable the green status thing to be clicked I should only need to show the options and click one button that say 'a' if b is enab
A: Thanks for the feedback

ScottHoo (Expert):
Q: As a reference point, I am having no issues between OneCare2 and Messenger Beta 8.5 refresh 1
A: Thanks for the note!

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: Re: [35] the temp folders are selected by default for photo backup - you need to exclude them manually...
A: Ah - that's a bug

Terrence (Expert):
Q: I purchased OneCare from Staples thinking that after the first beta program was over, I would use the serial # on the package to activate it - didn't work. I then purchased One Care online from MS, but could never activate product.
A: I'm a little confused about your scenario. When you say your product key doesn't work what happened. When you say you can't activate the subscription you paid for via the web, what was your experience?

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: do u plan to make tuneup customizable. like choosing to just do defrag and virus scan or some other options? What evrer the choice of the user may be?
A: Potentially. The first step we took was to allow you to set backup on a different schedule. Why would you want to split virus scan and defrag, though?

Mona (Expert):
Q: In regards to the VIrtaul machines. In my Network neighorhood, I get between 1 and 3 machines with OC06253478239878 naming conventions(not in the OneCare UI) If I click on them, I can browse as if it were the actual SHare..
A: This is an artifact of the way we're doing printer sharing (with file sharing). We are working on making these user friendly names so users know that these are OneCare printer sharing related things

ScottHoo (Expert):
Q: When I try to view the Scan Report - OC stops responding for a long time before displaying the Report! Why doesn't the Scan Results collect in a file for quick display?
A: In this case, I am guessing that there are a large number of threats and we are gathering the data on each one. Is this not the case?

ScottHoo (Expert):
Q: Is it possible to install OneCare on router? and I repeat my question about installing system on other language system. (this is question for sending me an installation file on my own risk)
A: OneCare now has support to "secure" certain routers if you're connected to them and wireless security is not enabled

Terrence (Expert):
Q: Should all of us on the perpetual beta have version 2 by now? I still have version 1.6.211.28?
A: no, we haven't upgraded the perpetual beta users yet at this time. Please continue with the perpetual beta version at this time.

ScottHoo (Expert):
Q: I have the actiontec GT704-WG which has a built in router and that is what I use for my wireless network
A: Unfortunately, we currently do not support ActionTec routers.

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: creating a new share name (even a one more userfriendly) for printer sharing is not exceptable... the machines have names so use them....
A: Thanks for the feedback - please do post in the forums as well so the rest of our team and customers can get this valuable input! https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard\_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US

ScottHoo (Expert):
Q: Do you plan to integrate OneCare into Windows in the future?
A: Currently, there are no plans for this.

Terrence (Expert):
Q: Do I have to worry about the fact that when "testing" the activation on Beta 2, it tells me that I need to purchase the product, even though my current subscription is active?
A: no, no need to purchase the beta. Some of the flow obviously is in preparation for the final release to production.

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: How will Windows Live One Care integrate with Windows Home Server and their backup software? Also, what other features will Live One Care share with Home Server?
A: Currently we have a fairly narrow story with OneCare and WHS on the same box. Working towards a better story.

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: Yes. I was wondering if you had any plans to add similar protection through OneCare, the Vista adds with the UAC?
A: Currently no plans

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: Is it possible you integrate encrypting tools into OneCare? I think about such things as "Lock this folder" or "Encrypt Document", "Encrypt Disk"...
A: We looked into this, but thought the bitLocker on Vista provided a compelling encryption story that we didn't want to compete with.

Mona (Expert):
Q: creating a new share name (even a one more userfriendly) for printer sharing is not exceptable... the machines have names so use them....
A: we are aliasing vista PCs so we don’t break any existing file shares. This would get created only if you have a local printer on vista. we're planning to have the alias be a combination of the PC name and OneCare prefix.

ScottHoo (Expert):
Q: OneCare needs an Exit feature to temporarly stop OC , so programs can be installed and/or for troubleshooting!
A: We are always looking at the ability to temporarily disable certain pieces of OneCare (like Firewall, Backup, etc. can be today)

Mona (Expert):
Q: will u guys consider adding an option to the onecare circle to run features of the onecare such as virus scan on another networked computer from another computer in the circle
A: definitely - here's the thinking behind our current set. With OneCare we only want to have the user do stuff that requires attention. We don’t think having on-demand scans is super useful - unless a scan hasn’t run and your PC is at a risk. In that case, you'll see a red/yellow action/notification asking you to start a scan - and you can do that remotely.

ScottHoo (Expert):
Q: Question 71 answer - No system is clean except for the Quarantine Failures - I have 2 HD's and 6 Volumes on the Drives!
A: Quarantined failures are currently being addressed and you will see improved behavior in this area in our next release

Mona (Expert):
Q: Why would a shared printer in Network list all the shares the same as the listed computer - this is simply a duplication of effort is it not?
A: we are creating these aliases on vista PCs to avoid breaking existing file shares - so essentially this is to ensure that printers are shared without breaking anything else in the process. We will make these aliases more user friendly so users know that OneCare's created them and what purpose they're for.

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: Have you ever thought about adding Internet connection tune-up?
A: What specifically would you like to see there?

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: another vote for Software Explorer...I need this to stop many random pieces of fluff from launching on boot!!!!
A: Thanks for the feedback (I agree!)

ScottHoo (Expert):
Q: The merging of Defender protection into OneCare does not include the Software Explores feature, which is greatly missed (by me anyway). Is there a possibility to add this functionality to OneCare?
A: Currently, we are not considering the addition of this feature

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: I gotta go... nice chat but its 1:30am here in Germany...hope we will repeat this...(maybe with a more europe friendliy schedule....bye
A: Thanks for joining us Gregor

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: Re [57]: NO - the printer share feature seems to create a new network share with this weird OC2342384723 name. But for me this is not only showing the printer but the same shares as the normal share that the pc shows as - so its a real duplicate...
A: This is a bug, thanks for the feedback! Can you please file a bug report? https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard\_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US

Q: Any plans to allow some sort of workaround for apparent Internal drives/partitions to be used for backup? Some of these requests are actually eSATA or other drives that are removable, just not recognized as such. If not, is eSATA itself being condsidered?
A: Currently, there are no plans for this functionality

A: This is a recent issue we've become aware of and are working on a solution

Q: wowsers..am bummed that there is no interest to add back Software Explorer..which is a STANDARD part of Defender on Windows until OneCare disables it.....
A: There's no work to add this into the OneCare UI, however, you can still boot Windows Defender via the start menu and use all functionality in Defender

Q: Re [57]: NO - the printer share feature seems to create a new network share with this weird OC2342384723 name. But for me this is not only showing the printer but the same shares as the normal share that the pc shows as - so its a real duplicate...
A: I believe this is a side effect of aliasing the PC. We would however like to look deeper into this - can you please go to https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard\_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US and submit this as a bug with as much detail as possible about your home network, PCs, images and support logs

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: Re: A[91] Are you saying that the fact the printer share creates a duplicate of the Network shares for a computer (Puting them under a totally new name like OC123456789090), is a bug?
A: I believe so, yes. Thanks a ton for the feedback - have you filed a bug on this? https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard\_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US

Q: I've never seen the secure a wifi network prompt (on a dLink preN router)
A: There are a couple of pre-qualifications that are necessary for us to provide management of the wireless security settings of your network. Namely, we must support the router you're using, the network must be classified as "Home or Work", and your network must be unsecured. If you meet the all of the criteria and you want to check whether your router is supported, feel free to send me the model number and I will look it up for you (the web page with this information is still in development)

Q: I ahve not seen a prompt to secure a wifi network. Using a 2Wire DSL/router/wap unit. I have it non-broadcast and WEP....should I see a message, or am I not a target for this feature?

Q: Have you fond the solution to the instability that makes MSMPENG.exe uses more that 90% of the cpu slowing the whole pc down from time to time? This bug was filed but is beginning to cause me so much problem, it's hard to continue the beta?
A: Yes, we are currently working on this issue and will hopefully have this addressed in the next release

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: How do I know if it is OneCare that is doing the printer sharing or if it is just sharing because of being set up in the Network & Sharing utility? Or does it matter? If not, then why would I need both?
A: You can go into the OneCare settings menu to see a list of printers we've shared out

ScottHoo (Expert):
Q: it sounds like you all have a ton of fixes and some potential fixes in "the next release" Is this release "imminent"? weeks away? months away?
A: We do not have firm dates for the next release, however, it should be coming soon. And yes, Luke and I agree on this one :)

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: aha...did not realise that OneCare has become a PrinterShare enabler...seems kinda weird..that was why "I" was sharing this printer, even though I did not intentionally do it...
A: Just trying to make life easier for you?

ScottHoo (Expert):
Q: Answer to Question 71 - The Report had No Errors other than the Quarantine Failures - my system has 2 HD'd with 6 Volumes!
A: Yes, that is expected. the quarantined failures are due to the threats being inside an archive file which takes an extremely long time to examine (thus the long boot times)

Terrence (Expert):
Q: When a fist installed the beta version of onecare a few weeks ago, it asked me to type my live id to give me access to the free beta. Can that information be changed after the initial setup?
A: It depends on what you mean by that. We ask for a LiveID twice. Once before installation ever takes place. This is not embedded into the client after setup so you can change it. We also ask to enable MPC functionality in the Free trial and also to Purchase. As soon as you do this association, you can not change this information without uninstalling and reinstalling.

Q: there is a reg . scanner on the web site safty scanner why is there not one in onecare are there plans to add one?
A: That is an insightful question. :) Reg Cleaner is an interesting feature. Customers want it...bad. It perennially lands on our top 5 features requested. However, when we look into it (and have implemented it as a part of our web scanner) we actually discovered that there is virtually zero customer value, and in fact it can, in rare cases, actually cause new problems. In general we are planning on moving away from reg cleaner

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: what is the benefit of sharing a printer through OC? Seems like this would add to the confusion if you are already setting up shares through Windows...
A: No benefit over doing it yourself if you know how to do it. We found that many customers had difficulty doing it on their own, though, so we looked at how to make things easier for these folks

Rajesh (Expert):
Q: I was still able to see the phanton computer share even after telling OC NOT to automatically share my printers with the computers in my circle. Named : \\OC0632563645357 Since I don't need to share my printers, why is this 'printer share' still there?
A: When did you turn off automatic printer sharing? This may have happened before you turned it off.

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: Luke, Carification: Are you considering backup to Internal drives in general or only eSATA for a solution?
A: We're *not* considering internal backup as a viable option, but eSATA is a unique case as it is closer to USB in some cases.

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: I turned on the auto printer sharing this evening, after chatting with you experts. I have not rebooted since this change. So yes, the printer share was created earlier
A: Cool, glad to hear it

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: Why is printer sharing part of one care? I just need a product to transparently tune up my ps's and protect them from malicious software and sites. I think a marketing guy went mad.
A: Maybe...we'll see if customers like it. :) In general, we're more than just security - we're about making your whole PC experience better, including connecting to devices and resources on your network

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: Lots of us have a montly upload limit, it would be nice if you could put a monly upload limiter on the "online photo backup". My provider currently limit my upload to 10go. At this rate the photo backup feature would use it all.
A: Interesting...this isn't common for most ISPs I know of. What country are you in and who is your ISP?

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: I am running the beta on Vista Ultimate, I have a backup every night running, when I installed the beta it appears to not detect my existing schedule and wants to create its own. I would much rather have it detect the schedule and check it off the list...
A: Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately, interoperability with the Vista backup was a prohibitive work item for us.

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: Ever since before original RTM, on all my OC machines, defrag now reports not all files could be defragmented, the report shows nothing. only way to stop the error was box re-build. but, after OC re-installatiion it returns ... any known cause/effect?
A: Hmmm...this could be a few different things. Have you filed a bug? https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard\_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: IMO OneCare should have concentrated on doing malware prevention and cleanup - and doing it well - and left alone the backup, sharing, and other functions to Vista itself, or WHS in the the case of backups..
A: Thanks for your feedback

Rajesh (Expert):
Q: I meant I turned OFF printer sharing tonight. But the share is still there.
A: Yes, we do not clean up shares when you turn off printer sharing as the user may want to turn it back on again.

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: Q.123 In canada, most high speed ISP gives you a montly dowload / upload limit for high speed plans. My ISP is videotron. Most other ISP ( high speed ) I know also have upload // download limits over wich they bill more than 6$ per go
A: I see. Yes, that would make online backup less attractive to you for sure.

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: I did contact onecare support about the defrag problem during very early beta testing. but, the person assisting me had not heard of the issue, and could not help me resolve it. I will re-file using your provided link, if I see this in OCB2.
A: Thanks. Do file a bug as well if you can - a different set of folks look at bugs to try to address them in the product itself.

Rajesh (Expert):
Q: I also think that Printer Sharing(let alone default printer sharing) is stretching One CARE a little far...i would rather you duplicate/improve defender..maybe do backups(if you do these maybe you should also take over Restore points?) but printers?
A: We have seen printer sharing as a major pain point for customers.

Luke Abrams_OneCare (Moderator):
Q: Will the on-line backup feature be made available for OC 2.0 beta testing, or will it remain limited to just a few inivited participants?
A: Yes and yes. :)

Rajesh (Expert):
Q: I don't see how enabling printer shares is helping anyone. If someone does not know how to turn it on themselves, what is the chance that they will know to click on OC25879878797834 named computer on the network and print to this share?
A: The goal of OneCare is to make this easy so the user should not have to do this manually.
