Accepting replication partners

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 8 Beta

Accepting replication partners

When determining a replication strategy for your organization, you can define a list that controls the source of incoming name records during pull replication between Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) servers.

In addition to blocking name records from specific replication partners, you can also accept name records owned by specific WINS servers during replication, thereby excluding the name records of all servers that are not on the list. Although both options exist, only one can be used. You can either block replication of records from specified servers or accept replication of records from specified servers.

Pull replication based on a list of accepted WINS servers can occur either during normal pull replication or in response to push replication.

To use the Accept records only for these owners feature, see Accept replication of records owned by a specified server.

Deciding whether to block or accept name records

When using multiple WINS servers, you can either block or accept records owned by specific servers. For example, when you remove a WINS server from service, you can block the server records from pull replication. For more information, see Blocking replication partners.

If your WINS server topology is designed around the recommended hub-and-spoke model, you can use Accept records only for these owners. In this way, you can maintain push-pull replication between key WINS servers (hubs) without replicating the name records for other replication partners (spokes) of each individual server.

Note

  • When choosing between blocking or accepting WINS server name records, it is useful to use the shorter of two lists. For example, if you have twenty WINS servers and you want to replicate records owned by only five of them, you can choose Accept records only for these owners instead of Block records for these owners. In doing so, you need only to create a list of five servers instead of 15.
