The Device Does Not Have a Device Driver

Applies To: Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista

When a device driver for a device is not available, Device Manager displays the device as Unknown Device, and places it in the Other devices branch. Also, a status of Error Code 1 or Error Code 10 may be displayed when you view the properties of the device in Device Manager.

Diagnosis

Windows could not find or install a device driver for the device.

Resolution

• Provide a network folder or other media with a copy of the driver package to the Add New Hardware wizard.

• If you are a standard user, you can only install device drivers if:

  1. The device driver is present in the protected driver store. For more information, see Staging Device Driver Packages in the Driver Store.

  2. The device must be on a list of approved devices for installation by standard users. For more information, see Controlling Which Devices Can Be Installed by Standard Users.
