Dev Box is now in maintenance mode, with no additional features planned. Microsoft's investments for developer cloud environments are focused on Windows 365, which provides a unified, scalable solution for developer scenarios.
Customers should consider Windows 365 as the recommended path forward for virtualized developer environments. Dev Box will remain supported for existing usage, and guidance will be provided to help customers transition.
Microsoft Dev Box is now in maintenance mode. The features listed on this page were previously planned but won't be released to general availability. No new features or capabilities will be added to the Dev Box service.
We understand this change affects your planning, and we're committed to supporting existing customers through this transition. Dev Box remains fully supported for current usage, and we'll provide guidance and resources to help you evaluate and move to Windows 365 when you're ready.
What this means for you
- Existing deployments continue to work. Your current dev boxes, pools, and configurations remain fully functional and supported.
- No new features will ship. Previously planned capabilities (listed below) won't proceed to general availability.
- Windows 365 is the path forward. Microsoft's investments in cloud developer environments are now focused on Windows 365, which provides a unified, scalable solution for developer scenarios.
- We're here to help. Guidance and transition resources will be provided to help you move to Windows 365 at a pace that works for your organization.
Previously planned features (not proceeding to GA)
The following features were on the Dev Box roadmap but are no longer being developed:
Enterprise management
- On-behalf creation: Provisioning Dev Box machines for other developers in your team.
- Firewall Service Tags: Configuring traffic rules by using Service Tags in your firewall setup.
- Developer offboarding: Automatic offloading of users from the service when they leave the organization or switch teams.
Performance & reliability
- Single Sign On (SSO) for existing Dev Box machines: Enabling SSO for already-existing Dev Box machines.
- Auto Remediation Improvements: Automatic remediation of connectivity issues to prevent connection blockers.
- Latency Improvements: Reduced mouse latency with high-resolution monitors and other latency optimizations.
Retired previews
The following features were previously available in preview and are no longer available:
- Guest account access: Guest user access to dev boxes via Microsoft Entra B2B collaboration.
