Overview of Azure Health Data Services - Data export in healthcare data solutions
The Azure Health Data Services – Data export pipeline in healthcare data solutions enables direct import of Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) data from an Azure Health Data Services FHIR service into your data lake in its raw JSON format. This integration simplifies the FHIR data import process and improves data accessibility, making healthcare data easier to use for advanced analytics within Microsoft Fabric's OneLake environment.
By deploying the Azure Health Data Services – Data export capability and the associated prebuilt Microsoft Azure components, you can bring FHIR data into the bronze lakehouse, where it stores as newline-delimited JSON (NDJSON) files. This streamlined setup ensures both the integrity and accessibility of healthcare data within the Fabric environment, facilitating retrieval and analysis.
The pipeline uses the FHIR $export API to export FHIR data to an Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 container on a recurring basis. As part of the configuration, you must set up a Fabric shortcut for export. After data exports from the FHIR server, it ingests into the bronze data lake, followed by a transformation into the silver data lake for refined analysis.
Healthcare data solutions support the full set of FHIR R4 resources outlined in the HL7 FHIR R4 US Core specification. Bringing your FHIR data into OneLake unlocks numerous analytical capabilities for clinical, financial (claims and explanation of benefits), and administrative data. You can use the solution and the comprehensive dataset to develop various analytical scenarios such as:
- Quality reporting
- Population health management
- Clinical research studies
- Operational reporting
- Decision support
Tip
If you don't have an Azure Health Data Services FHIR service in your environment, you can still test the FHIR data ingestion process. Use the sample FHIR datasets provided with healthcare data solutions and run the clinical data ingestion pipeline.
