Hi Ana Raquel Ribeiro dos Santos,
Thank you for posting in the Q&A Forums.
Open the document:
First, locate and open the Word document you need to edit.
Insert footnotes:
In the first column of the document, find the location where you need to insert a footnote.
Click the “References” tab, and then click “Insert Footnote” button (or press the shortcut key Alt + Ctrl + F).
Set the footnote format:
By default, footnotes may appear at the bottom of the page and automatically span two columns. In order to change this setting, you need to go to the Footnotes and Endnotes dialog box.
Click on the arrow in the lower right corner of the Footnotes group under the References tab (or click on the shortcut entry to the Footnotes and Endnotes dialog box).
Adjust the footnote layout:
In the Footnotes and Endnotes dialog box that pops up, locate the Position area.
Make sure that Footnotes is selected (not Endnotes).
In the Columns option below Footnotes, select 1 column (although this sounds counter-intuitive since the document is in two columns, setting footnotes to a single column will ensure that they don't cross over into the second column).
Note: In some versions of Word, it may not be possible to directly set footnotes to “1 column” to ensure that they only appear in the first column, because footnotes are column-spanning by default. But you can do it indirectly by adjusting page margins, footnote position, or document layout.
Apply and check:
Click the Apply or OK button to apply the changes.
Return to the document and check that the footnote appears only at the bottom of the first column and does not span to the second column.
Best regards
NeuviJ
