Important
This feature is in Beta. To use it, a workspace admin must turn on Governed agentic app-building from the Previews page. See Manage Azure Databricks previews.
Genie App Builder is a Azure Databricks-native tool for building Databricks apps with natural language, directly in the Azure Databricks UI. Describe the app you want, and Genie App Builder generates it and shows a working preview that you refine and then deploy. Because it runs on Azure Databricks, your data stays on the platform during development.
Genie App Builder builds apps inside an App Space. An App Space defines who can create apps, how apps can be shared, and what permissions apps have. To learn more, see App Spaces.
Requirements and availability
To use Genie App Builder, your workspace and account must meet the following requirements:
- Supported regions: During Beta, Genie App Builder is available in these regions:
- AWS:
ap-northeast-1,ap-south-1,ap-southeast-1,ap-southeast-2,eu-central-1,eu-west-1,us-east-1,us-east-2,us-west-1,us-west-2. - Azure:
australiaeast,brazilsouth,canadacentral,centralindia,centralus,eastus,eastus2,francecentral,germanywestcentral,japaneast,northcentralus,northeurope,southcentralus,southeastasia,uksouth,westeurope,westus,westus2. - GCP, GovCloud regions, and Mooncake (Azure China) are not supported.
- AWS:
- Partner-powered AI features: Enable these features at both the account and workspace level. See Partner-powered AI features.
- Networking: Workspace-level Secure Egress Gateway and serverless Private Link configurations do not apply to these apps. Apps built in App Spaces have no general public internet egress. Outbound access is limited to the Azure Databricks workspace and managed npm/PyPI package proxies.
- Dependency management: Packages are installed through a Databricks-managed npm/PyPI artifact repository proxy. Custom package repository locations are not supported.
- Cross-Geo processing: Depending on your workspace's Geo, you might need to enable cross-Geo processing to use Genie App Builder. Check Designated Services availability by Geo.
How to use Genie App Builder
You build an app by describing it in natural language, then refining it with follow-up prompts until it works the way you want.
Prerequisite: You have at least CAN CREATE APP permission on an App Space. See Configure an App Space.
- On the Apps home page, click the Build tab in the left navigation.
- Select the App Space to build in.
- Optionally, name the app.
- Enter a simple, natural-language prompt that describes the app you want.
- Let Genie App Builder generate a preview app, then sign in to view it.
- Refine the app with follow-up prompts. Databricks recommends short iteration cycles, especially when you're getting started.
- When the app works as you want, deploy it. After deployment, the app scales to zero when idle and back up when a user requests it.
- To keep improving a deployed app, click Genie App Builder on the app details page.
App runtime
Genie App Builder builds apps with Databricks AppKit, the Azure Databricks framework for data and AI apps.
Apps built with Genie App Builder run on an isolated, on-demand serverless runtime inside an App Space. Each app scales between zero and one instance and scales down after a default 30 minutes of idle time. The first request after scale-down experiences a short cold start while the runtime starts.
State in memory or on local disk is lost when the app scales down. Persist state that must survive in a Lakebase table, a Unity Catalog volume, or another external store. See App state. If you need an always-on app or horizontal scaling, use a dedicated-instance app. See Horizontal scaling for Databricks apps.
Tips for better results
To get better results from Genie App Builder, follow these tips:
- Start simple, then iterate: use follow-up prompts rather than one large prompt.
- Be specific about the UI and behavior: Describe the pages the app should have, the inputs users enter, the charts or tables to show, and the actions users can take. Also say how the app should behave, including which filters to apply, what default values to use, and where the app writes data.
Pricing
During Beta, there is no charge for Genie App Builder, App Spaces, or the apps built with Genie App Builder. Pricing for Beta features is subject to change.
