Multiplayer Blocked in Minecraft Java Edition (Bugged Microsoft "Child" Account)
After purchasing the official licensed version of Minecraft: Java Edition, the "Multiplayer" and "Minecraft Realms" buttons in the main menu remain greyed out and unclickable. When hovering over them, the game states that multiplayer is disabled in the account settings.
When attempting to fix this through the official Xbox privacy settings page ([account.xbox.com/settings](https://account.xbox.com/settings)), the system completely blocks any changes. Instead of toggle switches (Allow/Block), a warning message is displayed: "You do not have permission to change these settings."
Root Cause
The issue lies in the rigid and glitchy behavior of the Microsoft Family Safety / Xbox Live security systems:
- During account registration (or due to automated Microsoft algorithms), the account was flagged with a "child" (minor) status.
According to Microsoft policy, child accounts are not permitted to manage their own privacy and multiplayer settings.
The "Family Group" creation system, designed to bypass this, is currently experiencing severe bugs. When attempting to add the account to a family group under an adult "organizer" profile to grant permissions, the Microsoft Family Safety website throws an internal server error (TraceID accompanied by a melted popsicle image), blocking any further actions—even when using a high-quality VPN.
As a result, the account is stuck in a loop: it cannot change the settings itself, and it cannot be linked to an adult profile due to internal server errors on Microsoft's end.
What has already been tried and DID NOT work:
Checking regional restrictions (the issue persists both from local IP addresses and when using various foreign VPN locations).
Attempting to create a brand new "Family Group" via Incognito mode using a fresh adult organizer account (the Microsoft server still throws an error when sending the invitation or trying to adjust Xbox Live settings).
Logging out and logging back into the official Minecraft Launcher (the security token does not refresh because the settings are hard-locked in the Microsoft database).
Temporary Workaround
Currently, the only 100% reliable way to utilize the purchased license is to completely bypass the official Microsoft Launcher:
When using trusted third-party open-source launchers (such as Prism Launcher or Modrinth App) and authenticating through the exact same Microsoft account, the license is successfully recognized.
Third-party launchers completely ignore the internal, hidden Xbox Live multiplayer restrictions. Consequently, the "Multiplayer" and "Realms" buttons in Minecraft become fully active, allowing trouble-free access to servers.
Question to the Community / Support:
How can I force-update the account status to "adult" or fix this cyclical Microsoft Family Safety server error so that I can access the multiplayer features in the official launcher that I paid money for? After purchasing the official licensed version of Minecraft: Java Edition, the "Multiplayer" and "Minecraft Realms" buttons in the main menu remain greyed out and unclickable.
