Part II: Better Everyday Browsing
As Paul mentioned in Part 1 of this post, we’ve really focused on making your everyday browsing experience better. In addition to the useful changes he talked about, we’ve made IE8 even more useful with integrated services so that you can easily accomplish the common things you do on the web – search for a product, check the weather, map an address, and more)
In Beta 1, we showed how IE8 could be better with services with features like Accelerators and Web Slices (BTW, Accelerators are the same as the Beta 1 Activities with an updated name and icon). For Beta 2 we have even more features that help you use your favorite sites in new ways. Check out these features as you explore the product!
Search Box Suggestions
New to IE8 beta 2 are Search (text) Suggestions and Visual Search Suggestions which are wired into the Search box. As you type in the Search box, the selected search provider can offer query suggestions and display search results right in place! Not only can the search provider provide text suggestions, they can include images as well. This way you can dynamically narrow down your search results quickly and get single-click access to the web page without having to leave the Search box. Also, check out our new Quick Pick menu which puts your search providers at your fingertips.
To make it easier to take advantage of the enhanced Search box, we automatically update many of your existing search providers to versions that support suggestions. If you want more providers use the IE8 Gallery.
Accelerators
Copy-navigate-paste is old. Accelerators are services that you access directly from the webpage in the context of what you’re doing, letting you bookmark, define, email, map and more with a simple selection. Even your search providers are available as Accelerators. Some Accelerators provide previews so that you can view the result without having to leave the current webpage. Clicking on an Accelerator opens a new tab with the full result.
We’ve given you more control in IE8 beta 2 by adding custom categories to an Accelerator so that you can control how your Accelerators are organized. Just select an Accelerator from the Manage Add-ons dialog.
Find out if your favorite site has an Accelerator available from the IE8 Gallery.
Web Slices
As we showed in Beta 1, Web Slices give you updates directly from the Favorites bar, helping you keep track of your important information. A Web Slice is a subscription to part of a web page; when an update is available, IE8 bolds the title of the Web Slice so you know there’s something new to see. I have several Web Slices that make it easy to keep track of my favorites – the weather, friend updates on Facebook, popular links from Digg, and current auction items on eBay. When there’s something new to see, you can preview the update and click through to the full web page for more details. We’ve also added a refresh button from the preview for Beta 2 so that you can get the latest content without having to navigate.
When a site supports Web Slices a Web Slice icon appears in the command bar. Try out Web Slices with eBay, Digg, Live Search (type in your city + weather like “Seattle weather”), and more from the IE8 Gallery.
Feeds on the Favorites bar
In IE7 we added feed reading to the browser. For the IE8 Beta 2 release, we’ve made it even easier to reach your feeds by allowing them to be added to the Favorites bar. You’ll get updates just like you did before where unread headlines are marked in bold. Selecting a headline opens the full web page.
Feeds are available for most websites today – select the feed icon in the command bar and use the new add button
on the Favorites bar.
Suggested Sites
It’s easy to get stuck in a bit of a rut, browsing the same sites all the time. In IE8 we make it easier to find sites you might like. Once you turn on Suggested Sites, IE looks at what sites you visit and then offers recommendations of other similar or related sites, right from the Favorites Bar.
If you don’t have Suggested Sites on already, try it out by going to the Favorites Center and clicking on the “Turn on Suggested Sites” button at the bottom of the menu.
These features give you quick access to your services without having to leave the current webpage, making it faster and easier to browse the web. We’ll be blogging about the details of these features as well as how sites can enable these services in the next few weeks, so stay tuned!
In the meantime, we hope you try out Beta 2 and check out the IE8 Gallery to customize your browser with the services you use all of the time.

Deleting folders from the undocked favorites list is impossible (right click --> delete). Please fix this. Also don't collapse the favorites list when when the user deletes something via right click --> delete.Anonymous

While all this is cool, and I really appreciate the 'Find On Page' app (I really wanted this, it was a pain to type in a different window and follow elsewhere, to add to, it not being incremental search!), there's still one very important thing - when IE windows are closed, like something crashed, or I restarted the PC without closing the IE windows, why 'dn't the same windows show up the next time I boot into windows and start IE? Firefox has been doing this very well for a long time now? It would be great to have that app too, and then, we can compare IE and firefox! The tab-level crash recovery, I don't think serves as much purpose as this, but, I'ven't experienced it the hard way yet. But, IE8 is a lot cooler, and thanks for that. VSAnonymous

@fyi, what sites? I made an article about it on my site, http://mschat.net/blog/ie8-beta-2-is-it-worth-it-p4/ , and I suggest you at least try it out. Yes, the rendering engine is buggy, however, you can change it to Compatibility View, which will make the site render like IE7... It is a lot better then Beta 1 :)Anonymous

Skip my comment earlier about the crashing Windows Explorer. Seems that one of my tools was not compatible with IE8b2 so that program was the bad one, not IE8b2 on it self. I'm using IE8B2 for some time now, and it seems that the tabs are somewhat slow on opening a new tab. When a tab is open, it loads new sites very fast.Anonymous

- How about the Favorites drop-down list at "Add to Favorites" dialog? It is really bad, esp. with recent IE versions expanding the tree. If you have lots of favorites like me in a deep hierarchy you're doomed.
- Also how about using tags? Folder a/b/c could be considered as tags "a, b, c" and make your life simpler
- At the "Add to favorites" dialog, if you give at the current tree level a new folder name that already exists instead of selecting that preexisting folder and makes you get lost in the tree hierarchy (see [1] above) trying to find the preexisting folder to select it and then add the favorite Isn't there any usability expert at MS to redesign the favorites dialogs?

I really like this beta, but the worst bug i've noticed so far is that the onecare safety scanner doesn't load and freezes. i have to control-alt-delete and close the whole browser. please fix this so i can clean my registry!Anonymous

Am I the only one getting what appears to be partial page renders until you click on something, and then suddenly the rest of the page suddenly jumps into existance? Which site? Oh, most of them. That was a shock. Who can explain the wildly ranging RAM requirements for IE8 Beta 2 between different operating systems? These are the oficial numbers taken from the IE website:Windows Vista (RTM or SP1) - 512MB
Windows XP (SP2 or SP3) - 64 MB Vista requires 8x more RAM for IE 8 compared to XP based system? If so, it's yet another nail into Vista's coffin.

IE is great. Just a question though: Why is it not showing any of my pages with the word "upload" in them? Is this a bug or a "security feature"? I think it should rather prompt the user for something like that because you end up with a load of confused end users when pages start showing up blanks.Anonymous

A quick review of Beta 2: What I did like:The quick switching into the compatibility mode using a single button
The activities feature
Tab grouping
Correct saving of web pages into the web archive. Until now, the web archive choice tended to produce distorted results so "Save As Webpage complete" was my default option. The things that still need tweaking:
The favorites tab. The "Add Favorite" button was moved inside the menu but it now it feels even more awkward.
The favorites management was improved compared to IE7 but it is still clunky and inconvenient when I want to move a block of already saved favorites into the favorites folder or push them to the top of the list. In other words, it would be very handy if the favorites management window would allow to select multiple items at the same time using standard Ctrl (individual selection of several items), Shift (group selection) techniques.
Maybe it's just a matter of taste but the address suggestions (when typing in the address bar) now feels visually overloaded and cluttered without giving any real value.

When you turn off the favorites bar (so that it looks like the default layout on IE7 on Vista), the favorites button goes back being infront of the tabs, but where is the add favorite button gone and why can't I get it back. This is a backwards usability step as it is now harder to bookmark again. I don't like the favorites bar, just like I didn't ever like the links bar and always have them turned off. However the compatibility mode button (instead of emulate IE7) is a great move and fits nicely in. I do have to ask though if Trident is now standards compliant like Firefox and Opera, how come some sites (with no browser sniffing going on) work perfectly in IE7, Firefox and Opera but break in IE8.Anonymous

@Xepol: No, you're not - I see it too. I think they've parallelized the rendering engine to take better advantage of multi-core processors, but they appear to have some synchronization issues; it's somewhat random what it won't render (I've even seen it stop in the middle of elements). It also occasionally leads to IE thinking the position of a number of elements is different from what is rendered. Most pages will render correctly with a quick hit of F5, though, and there's always compatibility view.Anonymous

Forgot to mention: inline search is great. However, the supposedly "smart" address bar is really overdoing certain aspects. E.g. who would ever go to feeds by typing them in the address bar? Even if someone does it, they are certainly power users who can invoke feeds from the feeds list without any problem. For the rest, it's visual clutter. "Autocomplete suggestion" section - pretty useless and certainly shouldn't be on top implying it's the most important section. Eliminate. The remaining two sections - "History" and "Favorites" suggestions are OK but I feel the order should be reversed as the favorites indicate "firm" historical entries, used more often, which therefore should go to the top. And what's the point of having the arrow at the end of the suggestions? Again visual clutter and non-intuitive. The core psychology rests here: a) present to the user as few categories as possible (max. 3 is ideal); b) the suggestions from the most often used category should be on the top, etc. Currently you use 5 categories of suggestions(including the downward pointing arrow) in random order. If you keep only the favorites and history suggestions in this order when typing addresses, that should work fine. Simplicity is the king.Anonymous

I found a quite annoying error... "right click save as" does not work. Not correctly, anyway. On images, it saves everything with 1236~1.jpg and similar filenames. exe and rar files don't even get saved - they are downloaded, but are not copied out of the temporary internet files folder.Anonymous

The tab groups is a great addition to the user experience but they still need some tweaks. The InPrivate mode works perfect. As soon as the window is closed any activity perfomed is forgotten which is great.Anonymous

I found a bug when using the meta tag with a tranform. This makes the pages in IE8 Beta 2 all wacky! "<meta http-equiv="Page-Exit" content="progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Fade(duration=.25)" />" I setup 2 pages that have this meta tag, with some simple html in them. Test case: http://gis.civilsolutions.biz/downloads/IE8Beta2Bug/FirstPage.htm There is a link on the first page to the second page. If you try hitting the back button from the second page you'll see that the page doesn't get refreshed and it freezes up. Looks like the rendering engine doesn't like it.Anonymous

great speed, great feature but there are some improvements that you can do:
- scroolbar at news.softpedia.com is not working.I can only scroll the page using the mouse wheel.Works fine with compatibility view
- set the caret browsing on default
- close dialog doesn't need "close current tab"
- reduce the height of favourite bar
- address bar should be below the menu bar
- download manager with pause and resume capibility
- option to disable "reopen last session","inPrivate Browsing" and "use accelerator" at new tab.the tab loads slow
- option to disable some of the search option in address bar, like favourite,feed and history.Most user only use autocomplete suggestion
- improve the bookmark manager

Video is not working on the DNC website. My suggestion is to add a "bug button" to IE beta like the one that was in Apple Safari. It allowed them to find so many sites that their browser had issues with. There must be a clear way for users to easily report issues. This would allow the IE team to either address the issue within the browser or work with the Sites to have them improve their compatibility.Anonymous

I find two things here that I really like:
- Tabs are now very fast and light feeling.
- Accelerators are a great idea. When I formerly used Opera I used the right-click > "Search With Google" feature constantly. Now the things I don't like:
- The drop-down search history. I don't want to see every search term I've ever typed in. And I definitely don't want other users of the browser to see them. Clearing the history seems to have no effect on this, and there doesn't seem to be any way to turn the feature off.
- The move of Delete Browsing History to the Safety menu. I just don't associate clearing my history with the concept of "safety."
- The "awesome bar" is just confusing and distracting. I'm sure some people will enjoy this functionality, but please give us an option to turn it off. Also, clearing the history seems to have no effect on this either. Looking forward to the final release!

I'm not how happy I should be about this feature...BUT whenever internet explorer pops up a warning about crashing. Internet Explorer NEVER closes. A tab might close, but that's about it. Firefox 3 on the other hand takes down the whole program when it crashes.Anonymous

And please please revamp the password manager to be like the information bar in IE/Firefox. It's being an annoyance right now because the only options are "Yes" and "No". Bug 1: In beta 2, if you start to select some text with your mouse, and then move the mouse pointer to the bottom (or top) of the window to make the display scroll so you can select a wider range, no scrolling occurs. Bug 2: If you do select a range of text with your mouse (without scrolling), and the entire text in the frame occupies more than one screenful, the screen jumps after the text is selected.Anonymous

There's something missing in all navigators except Firefox. Microsoft wanted to reduce the number of click in Office 2007. Why don’t Microsoft do the same thing in IE8? I use a lot of folders in my Favorite bar. When I click on a folder it opens it but when I want to go on to another folder (in the favorite bar) I have to click 2 times before it opens it (1 to close the folder which is opened and 1 to open the new folder selected). Under Firefox you can see that when you open a folder of your favorite bar and go on to another one; you don’t need to click. It would be great to have the option to enable this in IE8.Anonymous

Great release, big improvement over IE7. I'm a Firefox user and there are four areas I noticed that are still critically lacking for me to say "wow!" to IE8:
- when importing bookmarks from Firefox, the links came in, but not the icons on the browser favorites bar. Can't live without them, and too much trouble to re-create from scratch. Need auto import of these!
- password management. Where is this in IE? It did not import from Firefox. Need it.
- Ad blocker: lots of firefox users like the ad blockers as it makes web pages much cleaner. Generally, IE lacks add-ons. IE8 is progress to that end but still missing a lot.
- Tried your built in search features, believe it or not when I select text and right click on it, the only search option is google. Live is under extra accelerators. Sounds good to me, but did you intend to bury your own search? On the plus side, download to excel is pretty cool. I already use it for data and tables on web pages, and it works.

Definitely not satisfied with the minor UI allowances, We still had more ability to change the UI in 4,5,and 6 than we do 7 and 8. Why can't Microsoft give us back what we always had? I want to be able to move the address bar, I want to be able to move the left and right arrows, I want to be able to put icons along side of the address bar. I am so frustrated by Microsoft because you CONTINUE to totally ignore this issue and I can not understand why? Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 was released on August 27, 2001, and it is now September 6 2008, and Microsoft still has chosen to give us a weaker and more inferior product when it comes to giving customers a choice with the UI. Jane Kim in closing I will state this, I see it as one of two ways.
- It can't be done because of limitations in Vista. OR
- Microsoft doesn't care and you are just refusing to allow users access to full ui customizations. Either way it is deplorable, and it's a shame, you gave us back not even half of what we use to have and you touting this as a GREAT NEW FEATURE! Disappointing, totally; absolutely Disappointing...

Please decide: are they called add-ons, addons, add-ins, extensions or what? Please decide: are they hosted on Windows Marketplace, download.com, ieaddons.com, download.microsoft.com or what? Please decide: Why so many download sites for different Microsoft products' extensions/add-ins/add-ons? Why? Visual Studio has its own site, IE its own, Office its own or what? Why so disorganized? Why are some of these sites under a Microsoft domain whilst others not? Why should ieaddons.com be its own domain? Please create a single site for all Microsoft extensions and put it under the Microsoft domain or at least a widely recognized domain. What happened to Windows Marketplace?Anonymous

What I will need from IE8 which make me retire my Firefox:
- Adblock
- Customizable interface (i.e support for theme)
- Zero memory leaks even after certain periods of time

As long as your design is spot on... it is about 90% at the moment... then i as many others... are not fussed about customisable interfaces... too many security issues... instability too... i'd rather your time was spent in other features... including download manager, "quick slice" (similar to quick view) for the favorites bar, beter favorites organiser... separating tabs into seperate processes identifiable on the windows task manager... PLEASE!!!!Anonymous
