How to Add a Global Resource Pointer to a Site

For the latest version of Commerce Server 2007 Help, see the Microsoft Web site.

After you use the Commerce Server Installation Wizard to install a global resource, you can add a pointer to the resource to any site in your Commerce Server Administration database. To add a global resource pointer to a site, you unpack the global resource pointer from a Commerce Server Site Packager file.

For example, after you install Direct Mailer, you unpack a site that includes the Direct Mailer resource. When you unpack the site, you set the global resource pointer for the site to Direct Mailer.

Before you follow this step, you must create a package file, or use one of the Commerce Server site packages that contain the global resource pointer you want to add to the site.

To add a global resource pointer to a site

  1. In Commerce Server Manager, expand Commerce Server Manager, expand Commerce Sites, and then expand the site that you want to administer.

  2. Right-click Site Resources, point to New, and then click Add Resource.

  3. In the Open dialog box, select the package that contains the global resource pointer you want to add to the site, and then click Open.

    Commerce Server Site Packager starts.

  4. In the Select Resources dialog box, in the Available resources box, select the global resource you want, and then click Add. The resource appears in the Resources to unpack box.

  5. Click Next.

  6. In the Global Resource Pointers dialog box, verify that the resource points to the appropriate global resource. You can create some new global resources from this screen. To do this, select Create New Global Resource when you are mapping the global resource pointer.

  7. In the Database Connection Strings dialog box, Site Packager lists the databases it will create and the servers on which it will create them. If you must create a new database for your global resource, click New Database.

  8. In the SQL Server computer box, type the name of the computer that will contain the database. In the Database name box, type the name that you want for the database. In the remaining boxes type a SQL Server login user name and password, and then click Create database.

  9. When you return to the Database Connection Strings dialog box, select a connection string, and then click Modify.

  10. In the Data Link Properties dialog box, make the necessary changes, and then click OK.

  11. Click Next.

  12. In the Unpacking is complete dialog box, review the log file of the unpacking process, and then click Finish.

The global resource pointer appears under the site in Commerce Server Manager.
