What is a Product Definition?

For the latest version of Commerce Server 2007 Help, see the Microsoft Web site.

Product definitions describe the products in your catalog that you sell. Product definitions determine the type of information that you will store and retrieve for each class of item that you sell. For example, because the information about shirts differs from the information that you keep for shoes, you must design different product definitions for each unique class of items that you sell.

The product definition is a collection of properties. For example, an online music retailer would create a product definition for the product Compact Discs. The product definition might contain the following properties: Artist, Title, and List Price. To build a schema for a specific type of product, you choose the appropriate properties and save the collection.

Note the following:

  • The list price property is automatically included in each product definition.

  • Do not add as a product variant property any properties that you want to use as product IDs.
