IIS Metabase Staging Topologies

For the latest version of Commerce Server 2007 Help, see the Microsoft Web site.

Commerce Server Staging (CSS) can replicate your site to other Web servers. This enables you to clone your Web site quickly and easily. CSS achieves this by replicating the Internet Information Server (IIS) metabase that contains your Web site settings.

CSS supports the following topologies for staging IIS metabase content:

  • Point to Point

  • Point to Multipoint

Note

IIS metabase replication is supported only if the source and destination servers are on separate computers and each computer must have CSS installed.

Point to Point

The following example illustrates the point to point topology for replicating the IIS metabase. The content is replicated from the source server to an endpoint server.

IIS Metabase point to point

The sequence of events is as follows:

  1. The CSS Administrator performs the following tasks:

    1. Creates an IIS metabase project on the source staging server and selects the Web site settings to replicate. Specifies the endpoint server as the destination for the project.

    2. Creates an IIS metabase project on the endpoint server and associates the endpoint site.

  2. The CSS Administrator, CSS Operator, or Windows Task Scheduler initiates replication of the IIS metabase project.

  3. CSS transmits the IIS metabase to the endpoint server.

Point to Multipoint

The following example illustrates the point to multipoint topology for replicating IIS metabase content. The content is replicated from the source server to multiple endpoints.

The sequence of events is as follows:

  1. The CSS Administrator performs the following tasks:

    1. Creates an IIS metabase project on the source staging server and selects the Web site settings to replicate. Specifies the endpoint servers as the destinations for the project.

    2. Creates an IIS metabase project on each endpoint server and associates the endpoint site.

  2. The CSS Administrator, CSS Operator, or Windows Task Scheduler initiates replication of the IIS metabase project.

  3. CSS transmits the IIS metabase to each endpoint server.
