Open a Work Item from a Work Item Link

To view information contained in linked work items, you can open them from the list of linked work items. You can open linked work items by using the following Team Foundation clients: Team Web Access, Team Explorer, Office Excel, and Office Project.

Note

Office Excel and Office Project open the linked work item in a read-only form. To modify a linked work item, you must return to the Office Excel work item list or the Office Project plan.

Required Permissions

To perform this procedure, you must be a member of the Contributors group or have your View work items in this node set to Allow. For more information, see Team Foundation Server Permissions.

Note

If you do not have permissions to view a work item that is linked, the link is shown, but only the ID and not the title of the work item appears.

To open a linked work item

  1. Open or select the work item:

    • From Team Web Access or Team Explorer, open the work item form for editing and click the tab for managing links.

      Note

The name of the tab might be Links, Other links, or Implementation. The name of the tab is determined by the work item definition.

    • From Office Excel or Office Project, select the work item row, and then click Links and Attachments (on the Team tab, in the Work Items group).

  2. Select the linked work items that you want to open.

To specify a continuous range of work items, press and hold the SHIFT key when you click the first and last work item in the range. To specify a discontinuous range, press and hold the CTRL key when you click each work item.

  3. Click Open or Open Linked Item.

Review the work item in the browser or the work item window. To modify the work item, see Modify a Work Item.

  4. (For Office Excel or Office Project) In the View/Edit Work Item Links and Attachments dialog box, click Close.
