AI capabilities in SharePoint make it faster and easier to create SharePoint sites and solutions using natural-language description. You review an AI-generated site plan before anything is created, then SharePoint provisions the site for you. Describe the site or solution you want, and AI will suggest a recommended structure (pages, lists, libraries and more). You can then interactively adjust the plan through chat. When you’re ready and approve the plan, the site is created for you in minutes complete with sample data.
Important
Building sites with AI will be rolling out in preview soon
Note
The site creation can take up to 30 minutes. Please do not close the browser while creation is progressing.
Why use Create site with AI?
Key benefits
Plan with AI: Describe what you need and get a proposed site plan (no SharePoint expertise required).
Review before you build: Edit the outline (pages, lists, libraries) before anything is created.
Fast provisioning: After approval, AI in SharePoint creates the site and configures content based on the site plan.
Ongoing help: After the site is created, continue to use AI in SharePoint to improve pages, organize content, and get answers.
Prerequisites
Before you start, confirm the following:
Enable AI in SharePoint (preview): A SharePoint Administrator or Global Administrator must enable the preview for your tenant. Your tenant must have opted into the preview using the All Sites or Exclude Selected Sites config. If you have opted in with the Selected Sites or No Sites config, users in your organization will not be able to use this feature. For enablement steps and prerequisites, see Get started with AI in SharePoint (preview).
Have a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. Users need an active Copilot license to use Create site with AI.
Have site creation permissions. Users must be allowed to create SharePoint sites in your organization.
Admins must enable self-service site creation for end users to be able to create their own sites.
SharePoint administrators create sites on behalf of users.
How to access Create site with AI
Use the SharePoint start page to launch the experience
From the SharePoint start page
Select the Build (if your admin has enabled the new SharePoint interface)
Then describe what you would like to build in the chat box

Alternatively, if you can’t see the Build button:

How it works
Create site with AI uses a planning mode where you review an outline of pages, lists, and libraries before provisioning. Nothing is created until you approve the site plan. AI site building follows the following steps:

Step 1: Provide a natural language description
Enter a short description of the site you want to create. AI may ask follow-up questions to confirm details.
Example: “Create a site to help my team collaborate and track project progress.”
Based on your description, AI proposes a site plan that can include pages, navigation, lists, libraries, columns, and views. You may be asked a few clarifying questions if more information is needed. In our example, the Solution Builder might ask follow-up questions, such as
“What kind of projects does your team work on? (e.g., marketing campaigns, software development, event planning, etc.)?”
“Do you need to track tasks with deadlines and assignments, or is it more about tracking overall project status?
These clarifying questions are necessary to help AI better understand the purpose of your site and to better understand your requirements.
Step 2: Review the proposed site plan
Review the proposed site plan in planning mode. The plan is an outline of what will be created (for example, pages, lists, and libraries), with short descriptions for each item.
A visual outline of your site is created showing the structure and each of the site components.

Select an item to review details such as proposed list columns or a page description.

Behind the scenes: SharePoint saves your plan as a markdown file - SitePlan.md. This is a structured instruction file that is used during provisioning. The markdown file contains a more detailed plan of every component of the site. The plan can be accessed by selecting the view site plan button.
Step 3: Refine the Site plan through chat
Use chat to answer clarifying questions and refine the plan. Refine the plan by adding or removing components, renaming pages, or updating list and library columns etc. Some examples of how to refine your plans include:
“Add a column for time estimate on the Tasks list.”
“Remove the Team overview page.”
The plan, including the visual outline updates as you make changes, however, nothing is created until you approve the final site plan. AI in SharePoint also surfaces recommendations to strengthen and enhance your solution, drawing on its understanding of common scenarios and what’s typically needed to support them.
Step 4: Create the site
When you’re ready, select Build it, then confirm the site name and sensitivity label.
During provisioning, AI in SharePoint uses SitePlan.md to:
Create the site
Configure navigation and settings
Create lists and libraries (columns, views, metadata)
Create pages with starter content
Add sample documents and list items (optional)
Provisioning can take up to 30 minutes to complete, depending on how many components are in the site plan. When provisioning completes, you’ll see a confirmation and a link to navigate to your new site.
Step 5: Explore the new site and provided content
The new site includes starter structure and content, such as:
Pages with starter content based on your scenario
Libraries with relevant names/columns and sample files
Lists with sample items so teams can understand the structure quickly
Step 6: Post-creation refinement and ongoing support
After your site is created, the creation experience ends, but AI in SharePoint remains available to help you continue refining and configuring the site. A Solution setup pane may open to help you get started
Provides a summary of what was created (pages, lists, libraries)
Offers quick links to key site components
Suggests next steps to complete your site (e.g., "share your site with others")

What's not yet supported
During the preview, some SharePoint features and integrations aren’t available in the site plan. If you ask for something that isn’t supported, you’ll likely get a response during the planning phase that AI cannot automatically complete the task and may suggest to complete it manually after the site is created. A few example of features not yet supported include complex Power Automate flows, permission policies custom formatting, advanced web parts, or third-party integrations.
For example:
Complex Power Automate flows
Tenant governance or permission policies
Custom formatting, advanced web parts, or third-party integrations
Troubleshooting
If you run into issues, try the following:
Create site with AI isn’t available
Verify AI in SharePoint (preview) is enabled, you have a Copilot license, and you can create sites.
Verify that the user is accessing the feature from a site where AI in SharePoint is enabled. If NoSites is selected during enablement, then the feature will be inaccessible.
The plan is missing a component: Rephrase your request or add it manually using natural language.
