What’s Changing?

Microsoft Stream team is revamping the mobile apps on Android & iOS so that users can now access Stream (on SharePoint) video content on mobile as well. For tenants who have videos distributed across Classic and Stream (on SharePoint), their users will now be able to access both Classic and Stream on SharePoint content within the same app. Some of the key changes we are bringing to the app experience as part of this revamp:

  1. Complete new UX/UI to provide best-in-class video viewing experience to users

FAQs

Q. What are the differences between the Classic app and the new revamped one?
A. See section What’s Changing?

Q. I don’t see the video upload functionality on the revamped app, how do I upload my videos?
A. Upload & Recording capabilities will be brought back to the revamped mobile app soon but will only be supported for SharePoint videos. This is in line with our goal of providing a modern video experience on SharePoint as we move towards deprecation of Stream Classic (Details: The new version of Microsoft Stream). We encourage users to upload any new videos to Stream (on SharePoint) to experience the latest which Microsoft Stream has to offer.

This means that starting with this update, we will NOT be supporting videos uploads to Stream classic on native Stream mobile apps for iOS and Android anymore. In case users still feel the need to upload videos to Stream classic, they can do that using the Classic Stream web portal on mobile or desktop: Stream (Classic) Web portal (Details: Upload video to Classic)

Q. I see both Classic and SharePoint portals on the new app. How do I change the default landing experience for the users in my tenant?
A. The revamped Apps provides capability to seamlessly access both Classic and SharePoint videos with an in-app switcher experience that lets users switch between Classic and SharePoint portals within the same app. The default portal where the user lands is determined based on the tenant level setting that tenant admins can change as defined here: Default Stream portal setting (section named: "Direct the Stream app tile launcher to Stream (on SharePoint)").

Q.Does the Stream app work on Android tablets and iPads?
A. The Stream mobile app is optimized to work seamlessly on tablet devices.

Q.Will I still have access to my Stream classic content?
A. Yes. Just use the switcher on the left pane to navigate between Stream Classic and Stream (on SharePoint) portals. The revamped mobile app will continue to support classic videos until we fully retire Stream (Classic).

Q. Can I continue to use the classic mobile app for some time since I don’t find all the capabilities I need on the revamped app?
A. You can continue to use the legacy app till you don’t update to the new one from app store (iOS) or play store (android). We recommend turning off the auto-update on your device in that case, so that the update doesn’t happen automatically in the background. Once updated, you will NOT be able to go back to the classic app. At some point in future, we will deprecate the classic app and you will be notified via usual communication channels when that happens.

Having said that, the team is working hard to bring more and more capabilities to the revamped mobile app over the coming quarters. Functionality you are looking for is coming sooner than you expect.

Q. I would like to create a list with videos to watch later
A. Stream mobile apps give you the capability to create lists using "favorites" so that you can easily come back to your earmarked videos at a later time. Just tap on 3 dot menu of any video, select “Add to favorites” and the video will then be available in the Library section on the app.

Q. Can I cast the video to my smart TV?
A. Currently the mobile app doesn’t support “cast to TV” capabilities. Though you should be able to use your mobile device’s connectivity option to mirror your screen on your smart TV to play videos from Stream mobile app.

Q. How can I still listen to the audio playing in the background when phone screen is locked?
A. Background playback (when screen is locked) is NOT available on the Stream mobile apps currently. Having said that, this capability is on the prioritized roadmap for the product team and the team is working actively to get the feature out to our app users. You will be notified via usual communication channels when the same is available for general availability.

Q. I couldn’t find the answer I was looking for, what do I do?
A. Please reach out to streammobapp@microsoft.com with your query or suggestions.
