Integration of MSDN Blog User Account with MSDN Forums Profile

On January 27th the MSDN blogs user accounts merged with the MSDN Forums Profiles. 

This is part of a profile centralization effort, which consolidated our users’ profile suites down to a single account to be used across the MSDN websites.

What is the benefit?

  • The main benefit of a centralized MSDN Profile system is to simplify the online community experience.
  • The single Profile model gives you the ability to navigate seamlessly through not only the MSDN Blogs, but also through the MSDN Forums.

How will it work?

There is one of two options you will encounter as a previous user of MSDN.

  • If you have an existing blog user account but do nothave a MSDN Profile, the system will use your pre-existing Blogs account to create a MSDN Profile.
    • When you make your initial visit the Blogs after the update, you will notice that some aspects of your profile (your avatar, for example) may have changed.
    • To update this information, you can simply click on your name in the site header, which will take you to your MSDN Profile page, where you can customize your settings.
    • Once your MSDN profile has been created, you will be given a chance to review and change your Blog site specific settings. 
  • If you already have both a blog user account as well as a MSDN Profile, you will notice that the MSDN Blogs will now display your MSDN Profile information.
    • Clicking on your name in the site header will take you to your MSDN profile page, where you can view and edit your profile.
    • The Settings link will now take you to the Blog Site Settings page.  It is here where you will be able to manage any Blogs specific settings such as: editor, type, date, format, time zone and so forth. 
    • From the settings page, you will also be able to manage and find your Friends.

For those who don’t yet have a user account or a MSDN Profile, you will be guided through the new MSDN Profile creation process.  From that point forward, MSDN will use the MSDN Profile automatically.

You are not required to create an MSDN Profile to read a blog or other MSDN content. You will need a profile to add MSDN Community Content, and some blogs will require a Profile to post a comment there.

We are very excited about bringing the Blogs to the MSDN Profile.  This is a tremendous step forward which will make an already awesome community that much richer!

    Not at this time... Hosting and writing for an MSDN Blog is only available to Full Time Microsoft employees at this time. It is something we've been considering but aren't yet ready to make that change. Thanks!

    The work has now been completed. As an Microsoft Employee, please visit http://bloginfo while on Corpnet for more information. The blogs do not work with @microsoft.com Live ID accounts. Information regarding associating your Live ID to your domain alias was sent in email.

    Your email address is already in use by another user, NanaLich. In order to complete account creation you must first change the private email that is set for the user NanaLich. Please sign out and then sign in with the Windows Live ID associated to the NanaLich account. Modify the private email and then reattempt to create this account. If you do not recognize this user NanaLich, please use the site feedback form to report this problem so that we can assist you in creating your account. Since I don't get a blog profile at all, how could I fix this problem?

    @Nana's Lich - do you have another Live ID you've used before? You may have signed in and then set the private email address to a different email than your Live ID? If you log in with that other Live ID, you can then go into Settings to change the Private Email address. Once changed, you can then sign in with the new Live ID.

    I cannot login after this change. It tells me that a user with my email address already exists, and that I should login with the Live ID account that is associated with that email address to change the associated email on the "old" account. I was however logging in with that live ID account, I only have one, so I am stuck at this point. My blogs.msdn.com username is "egil".

    I used to have a Blog that was created under my @microsoft.com and now I am unable to access it anymore. I am required now to sign-in at Microsoft.com under my Domainusername. Every time I try to sign-in at that page I get the "Sorry, we cannot sign you in to this service with your @MICROSOFT.COM ID.". If it was the intention with the new changes that Microsoft Employees would get locked out of their Blogs and thus quit Blogging then it was a successful project.

    I am trying to sign into blogs.msdn.com and get the error below.  I am Jeff Wharton and my private email is my Windows Live ID and it's what I use to sign-in to MSDN/Technet Forums.  i don;t want to change my provate email as everything I do is based around it.  How can I sign in to blogs.msdn.com and link it to my EXISTSING Windows Live ID? Sorry! We can't create your account right now. Your email address is already in use by another user, Jeff Wharton.     Hi everyone! If you have troubles for login into your account, need send a feedback to MSDN blogs click on Provide Site Feedback on MSDN Blogs on home page or go to this url lab.msdn.microsoft.com/.../contactus.aspx and in few minutes the team can resolved your access trouble. Regards

    It took me a while to understand that only Microsoft employees can create blogs here. You could present this crucial information a bit clearer. It's not obvious to a visitor.

    It seems 5 years passed since the posting. And many users still ask the same question: Why many talented developers from across the world have no chances to create their blogs on the Microsoft platform? Do you have any idea in this regard?
