The Best Practices Analyzer tool for Team Foundation Server examines a Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) class (Win32_OperatingSystem) to determine the value for the ServicePackMajorVersion key. The tool also examines the following registry entry to determine the version of Windows that is running on the target computer:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\CurrentVersion

A warning appears if the target computer is running a Windows 2000 Server operating system but not Service Pack 4.

As a best practice, you should install the most recent service packs for all software in your deployment of Team Foundation Server. For more information about how to obtain and install service packs for Windows 2000 Server operating systems, see "Windows 2000 Service Packs" on the Microsoft Web site.

To update computers that are running Windows 2000 Server

  1. Install Service Pack 4 on all domain controllers and database servers that are running a Windows 2000 Server operating system.

  2. Install the most recent software updates from Windows Update.

  3. Install the most recent service packs on all computers that are running Team Foundation Server.
