How to: Create Application Diagrams

You can start defining applications in Application Designer by creating a solution with a blank application diagram. To add a blank or existing application diagram to an existing solution, see How to: Add Application Diagrams to Solutions.

To create a solution with a blank application diagram, use the following procedure.

To create a solution with a blank application diagram

  1. On the File menu, point to New, and click Project.

  2. In the New Project dialog box, click Distributed Systems under Project Types.

  3. Under Templates, click Application Design

  4. Specify a name and location to save the solution.

Visual Studio creates the solution and Application Designer displays the blank application diagram. In Solution Explorer, the diagram appears with an .ad extension in the Solution Items folder. The document tab at the top of the diagram displays the diagram name and an abbreviation ([AD]) representing the designer.

You can now start defining applications. For more information, see How to: Define Applications on Application Diagrams and Overview of Applications on Application Diagrams.
