How to: Access the Smartphone Emulator File System
The Smartphone emulator has no File Explorer. Use the following technique to access the Smartphone file system. To complete the process, you must have ActiveSync 4.0 or later installed.
Before attempting to use ActiveSync with an emulator, make sure no device is connected to your desktop computer and that USB connections are disabled in ActiveSync.
Note
If you close the Device Emulator Manager or close the emulator after completing the following steps, the ActiveSync connection also closes.
To access the Smartphone emulator file system
On the Visual Studio Tools menu, click Device Emulator Manager.
In the Available Emulators box, select the emulator whose file system you want to access.
On the Device Emulator Manager Actions menu, click Connect.
An icon appears beside the selected emulator indicating that a connection has been made.
Right-click the selected emulator, and then click Cradle.
The icon changes to show the emulator is cradled.
Open ActiveSync.
On the ActiveSync File menu, click Connection Settings.
Select the Allow connections to one of the following check box.
Select DMA from the list of ports, and then click OK.
ActiveSync now initiates a partnership with the emulator. Follow the instructions provided by the New Partnership Wizard.
Note
If a partnership is not initiated automatically, click Connect in the Connection Settings dialog box, and then follow the prompts in the Get Connected Wizard.
After you have completed the ActiveSync partnership steps, click Explore on the ActiveSync toolbar to access the Smartphone emulator file system.
Note
Whenever you want to use an emulator connected with Visual Studio using ActiveSync, use the Device, not Emulator, target of the corresponding platform.
