Notes

  • Clusters—DPM can protect data in the following clustered applications:

    • File servers

    • SQL Server

    • Hyper-V—Note that when protecting a Hyper-V cluster using scaled-out DPM protection, you can’t add secondary protection for the protected Hyper-V workloads.

    • Exchange Server

    • DPM can protect non-shared disk clusters for supported Exchange Server versions (cluster continuous replication), and can also protect Exchange Server configured for local continuous replication.

    • DPM can protect cluster workloads that are located in the same domain as the DPM server, and in a child or trusted domain. If you want to protect data source in untrusted domains or workgroups you’ll need to use NTLM or certificate authentication for a single server, or certificate authentication only for a cluster.

    • Protection of SQL AlwaysOn with Clustering. Protection and recovery of availability groups that are built with or without clustered instances is now supported in DPM 2012 R2 with UR2 and works seamlessly exactly like it does for nonclustered availability groups.

DPM 2012 R2 UR2 supports clustered primary and secondary servers, clustered primary and stand-alone secondary servers, stand-alone primary and clustered secondary servers’ scenarios. Stand-alone primary and secondary servers’ scenario is already supported.

  • Client computers

    • Protected volumes must be NTFS. FAT and FAT32 volumes can’t be supported

    • The volume must be at least 1 GB for DPMprotection. DPM uses Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) to take the data snapshot and the snapshot only works if the volume is at least 1 GB.

  • SQL Server

    • DPM doesn’t support the protection of SQL Server database hosted on cluster-shared volumes (CSVs).
  • Exchange

    • The eseutil.exe and ese.dll versions on the Exchange server and the DPM server version must match. For example a 64-bit DPM server will needs the 64-bit version of eseutil.exe and ese.dll.

    • Maintain up-to-date copies of these dll files as follows:

      1. Install the Microsoft Exchange Server management tools on the DPM server. Install the management tools for the latest version of Exchange that you’re running.

      2. At the command prompt open the \Bin folder iAtn the DPM installation folder. Then run the following to create a hard link for eseutil.exe:

        fsutil hardlink create <link> <target>

        For example:

        fsutil hardlink create “c:\program files\microsoft\dpm\bin\eseutil.exe” “c:\program files\microsoft\Exchange\bin\eseutil.exe”

    • Before you can protect Exchange Server 2007 data in a Clustered Continuous Replication (CCR) configuration, you must apply KB 940006.

  • File Server

    • Before you can protect a file server running Windows Server 2008 R2, you must apply the hotfix KB 977381.

    • DPM 2012 R2 must be running on Windows server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2 to protect Windows Server 2012 deduped volumes.

  • Hyper-V

    • For Hyper-V running on Windows Server 2008 R2 make sure you have the updated described in KB 975354 installed.

    • For Hyper-V running on Windows Server 2008 in a cluster configuration make sure you have updates KB 948465 and KB 971394 installed.

  • SharePoint

    • Before you can protect a computer running Office SharePoint Server 2007, make sure you have the update described in KB 941422 installed.

    • If you use the Office SharePoint Server Search service, before you can protect Office SharePoint Server 2007 SP1 data, make sure you have updates KB 951695 and KB 941422 installed.
