You can use eDiscovery to surface Viva Pulse content from within the Microsoft Purview compliance portal. The following Pulse data is discoverable using Microsoft Purview:
- Pulse requests: Pulse requests created and sent by users.
- Pulse responses: Responses to Pulse requests by users.
- Conversations in Pulse reports: Conversations messages posted as part of a response to an open text response in a Pulse report.
- Author's note in Pulse reports: Notes drafted by the author and shared with other users as part of sharing a report.
Prerequisites
- Licensing: Because discovery of content within Microsoft Purview requires eDiscovery premium, you must have appropriate licensing. Note
- For any content search for Pulse requests created after September 1, 2025, you can do an eDiscovery search of Viva Pulse data in Microsoft Purview.
- Prior to September 1, 2025, Pulse requests and responses data were stored in Microsoft Forms. Hence, if you're looking for Pulse data, you may have to rely on an eDiscovery search of Microsoft Forms data in Microsoft Purview.
How to search for Pulse content via Viva Pulse content
Microsoft Viva Pulse content is discoverable using the author's Exchange mailbox locations (custodial, noncustodial, or other).
To find both Pulse requests and responses, you can use the Viva Pulse type when creating a collection using the query builder or use the KQL editor with ItemClass:IPM.File.VivaPulse* as the search term.
You can identify specific Pulse requests by searching for the Pulse request title or ItemClass=IPM.File.VivaPulse.Definition
You can identify specific Pulse responses by ItemClass=IPM.File.VivaPulse.Response
You can identify specific conversation messages as part of responses to open text responses in Pulse reports by ItemClass=IPM.File.VivaPulse.Conversation
You can identify specific author's note drafted in Pulse reports by ItemClass=IPM.File.VivaPulse.ReportNotes
Pulse requests and responses can be grouped within the review set by selecting Group by conversations and related items.
