Data Management gateway setup fails without any Error message to work with.

Recently I ran into issue where DMG fails to install and as such on error windows there is nothing with which I can work with.

I have shown screenshot of screen that it shows below. (two screenshots, start screen and failure screen)

 

 

 

 

Now what can I do with this error?

Pretty much nothing other than pulling my hair and scratching my head!!!

So I decided to enable logging for this MSI.

 

How to enable MSI logging?

Once you enable logging, logs will get generated in %temp%

 

When I looked into this logs I saw below entries,

So I thought why it is not able to add firewall rule, so I checked firewall service and it was disabled!!

 

 

 

That explains why it is not able to add rule, so I went ahead and enabled firewall service. (you can disable firewall using firewall management utility  but there is no need of disabling firewall service as such.)

 

 

I again ran DMG setup after enabling firewall service and as expected it worked fine.

 

 

Of course error messages need to improve but till then happy fishing!!!!

    Hi Indira, Just want to know did you check windows event logs under Data Management gateway category in case it shows up more details? Also did you try re-generating key from portal and using that key to register? Thanks, Dilkush

    Hi Dilkush, I created a new key, when I am going to register it I am getting a error "Failed to register gateway key. Check that  Data management gateway is in  conencted state and host service  is started. I started the Datamanagenent host service already. still getting the issue. Any help will be highly appreciated. Thaks, Indira

    Hi indira, I'm suspecting issue with firewall. If you can try from home network or if mobile internet is good then create hotspot and try using that network to register gateway. check 2nd point in "Possible symptoms" of below article, support.office.com/.../An-Inside-look-at-Microsoft-Data-Management-Gateway-078d306d-2d28-409c-962b-d80b69a1d0b2 Let me know if this doesn't help. -Dilkush

    Hi Dilkush, I got unrestricted accedd in my machine. Still not able to register the key . The same error ..."Failed to register...." Please help me out.

    Hi Indira, I think you will have some free support cases with your subscription why not use one of them? At this point I need access to machine or some sensitive infos like this key so that i can try from my machine and see what happens. If its ok to share then you can send that in email. Thanks, Dilkush
