Windows SDK January CTP/February CTP plans

The Windows SDK team is closing on the January CTP release early next week, and we're planning on it being live early the following week. This is a small supplemental release, with the only major updates being some new Windows Workflow Foundation and Windows Communications Foundation content.

February CTP will be our next major release. Expect it to be posted to the web in about 5 or 6 weeks. This SDK will contain some more major changes. The key changes from my standpoint as setup PM are that we are planning on posting a web download (no more having to download an ISO - though that option will still be available), and custom install options will also be available. We're aware that not having those options available for the December CTP has been ugly, and we're on target for the dev work to be complete on this for February.

We're also going to ship the Server 2003 R2 SDK in between the January and February releases.

And we're working on helping resolve these install issues that I posted about yesterday.

Please give me feedback if you have questions. I read every comment, and I'm also planning on posting more in the new year.

    Is the Windows Server 2003 R2 SDK going to be a "new" version of the Platform SDK (the successor to the 2003 SP1 SDK that's current right now)? And is the Windows SDK (when the final version is released) going to be the successor to the Platform SDK or is it going to sit alongside it like it does right now?

    Any plans to have a separate WinFX download that just covers the managed parts of the API?

    Actually personally I was never even a fan of the fact that WPF and WCF were bundled into the same download - they have absolutely nothing to do with each other except two letters in common in their acronym.

    I'm very interested in coding with WPF but I have absolutely no interest in WCF or WF at the moment (nobody's yet managed to show me any actual problem I might face while coding that those technologies might apply to) and I'm certainly not interested in all the C++ and unmanaged APIs that are implied by a "Windows SDK". (It was an effort to resist the temptation of using the word "legacy" in that sentence ;) )

    If it makes sense to Microsoft from a business perspective to have the same team working on all these things, or to keep them in the same source code repository, that's great. But it doesn't make sense to a customer to have to download hundreds of megabytes of irrelevant stuff just to be able to use one of the APIs that are included. Please make separate installers as well as the big monster one! :)

    What about the Xaml Forms designer?
    Is there going to be any major changes in this release? What about the Pebruary release?

    A: Correct on both counts. The Windows Server 2003 R2 SDK succeeds the 2003 SP1 SDK and the Windows SDK succeeds the Platform SDK. Current plans are for the WinSDK to install parallel to the PSDK, but for R2 to require delection of the 2001 SP1 SDK.

    Where is this R2 SDK??  I was in the R2 beta and have been waiting for the SDK ever since R2 went gold.  I really want to program on the MMC 3.0 RTM.  However, MS downloads only have an RC of the redistributable.  What's the story on this SDK?  Thanks again.  webmaster@accs.net
