Demo Notes, Take III

Here's a few more hints on the demo that I've come across while purusing the forums. It won't help Abe, who's already given up and moving to X-Plane, but maybe it will help you.

  • Overall performance: AI road traffic and autogen can contribute to poor performance so scale them back. We've made some progress since the demo build.
  • Transparent FS2004 aircraft: I forgot to include envmap.bmp in the demo. You can copy if from the FS2004 \texture folder to the FSX \texture folder if you have FS2004.
  • UI music: There's an icon in upper right corner to mute the music as well as a setting in the General Settings dialog. You can also use your own .WAV files by putting them in the \sound\uimusic folder.
  • 2D cockpits: they're still there. Just press 'A' when in the cockpit, press 'F10" whenever, right-click on the view window, select View from the main menu, select the '2D cockpit' option on the Display Settings | Aircraft tab...
  • MSXML4 install errors: we think is caused by a "broken" installation of an older version of MSXML. We're looking at the issue. In the meantime some people have had success installing MSXML (4.0 or 6.0) directly from microsoft.com.
  • Out-of-memory errors: You can get an out-of-memory error in the UI by going to either the Weather or Flight Planner dialog then going to the Failure dialogs. We're looking into this, though it's poetically ironic it happens when you click on Failures...

There's some more I wrote down at work but forgot to bring the paper home. I'll try to remember what they were later. But right now I have to run--I'm taking Jackie out to dinner. The Better Homes & Gardens issue featuring one of her home designs hit the shelves this month and we need to celebrate!

    Hi,

You know people tell me all day everyday how stressful our job is (ATC) but I honestly cannot imagine the pressure you guys are under right now. Hats off to all you guys and hoping that those of us helping with the beta testing are making your job a little easier....well maybe not....we're probably making it that much harder.....I take that back  : )

    Cheers.

Thanks again for all your hard work and attention. Like another poster said, I cannot imagine the kind of pressure you and the team are under. We take so much for granted in our "instant gratification" society.

I am curious to know if you and the team have had bug reports from users of the demo that are over and above or different than what the beta testers have reported? If the answer is yes then releasing the demo was a strategically good move even though more laborious

    Thanks again
    Bill

    I am new.

is the music going to be restricted to .wav files? I know microsoft are keen to push this format unto us, but I'm still loving my mp3's. Any chance of an mp3 or wav player in the planes?

Still good work so far, definately gonna be buying this little beaut!

Several users of FS-Blaze have had errors installing MSXML4 SP2 - installation of the Hotfix KB832414 has solved the issue for many, and might be just the trick here...

any solution yet on the MSXML SP2 problem that's affecting a great many of us? I was able to install both demo and retail version with no problem.  Then, I did a reinstall of XP and for the first time downloaded critical updates.  Subsequently, installs of FSX do not work. I get the MSXML error

Spent the whole day trying to fix the msxml error.  I've NEVER said anything bad about an MS product, till now.  I see this was an issue with the demo, and FSX shouldn't have been released until it was fixed.   I've been a fan since FS4, but my patience is running a bit thin here.
