Select a hosting method for hosted controls

An aspect of Unified Service Desk default page handling is that it uses the WPF WebBrowser component to host the webpages. By doing this, the security subsystem in Internet Explorer and Windows allows the application to operate the browser functionality in the same mode as the application without changing the settings in Internet Explorer, and therefore reduces the security of Internet Explorer for applications outside of Unified Service Desk. While there are advantages, occasionally you may find that you need the features of an Internet Explorer Add-in or a feature in the native browser that may not be supported in Unified Service Desk’s traditional method of hosting windows.

While you can use the CCA Hosted Application type of hosted application when creating a hosted control, and set up the hosting type as Web Hosted Application, you will lose many of the native features of Unified Service Desk such as events and toolbars. Because of this limitation, Unified Service Desk has a special option called Hosting Type for hosted controls of type CRM Dialog, CRM Page, and Standard Web Application. By default, the Hosting Type is set to Internal WPF when you create a hosted application, which in most cases is most reliable and convenient.

If instead you select IE Process as the hosting type from the drop-down list, the application will launch Internet Explorer (iexplorer.exe) externally, and attach the window. Everything else about the behavior remains the same.
