Live Smooth Streaming 是標準 Smooth Streaming 的現場廣播延伸技術。 標準 Smooth Streaming 內容會編碼成 IIS Smooth Streaming 檔案，再發送到發佈點並隨選進行資料流處理。 Live Smooth Streaming 使用相同的編碼方法並建立相同的檔案類型。 不過，資料流會隨著廣播即時產生，範圍從簡單的演講或會議到複雜的多媒體製作，包含各種即時和檔案式來源。 如果您想使用 Live Smooth Streaming，可使用 VC-1 或 H.264 轉碼器對即時資料流進行編碼，不過輸出格式必須是 IIS Smooth Streaming。

Microsoft Expression Encoder 包含建立成功的 Live Smooth Streaming 工作階段所需的所有工具。 如同標準 Smooth Streaming，您的發佈伺服器也需要 Microsoft Windows Server 2008、Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS)、適用於 IIS7 的 Smooth Streaming 延伸模組，以及適用於 Live Smooth Streaming 的 Microsoft Silverlight。
