Printer Roaming

Applies To: Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2

Printer Roaming Overview

In Windows 8, users can roam a number of settings with their Microsoft account like personalization, desktop background, passwords and web history.

In Windows 8.1, this support is extended to include roaming of printers. If you sign in with a Microsoft-connected account, printers may optionally be roamed with it using Sync technology.

Printer Roaming Requirements

Printer connections will only be roamed if they would install on all processor architectures, including ARM/RT, which requires the use of a version 4 printer driver.

The following connections are NOT roamed:

  • Direct Connections (e.g. Local printers on USB, WSD, Standard TCP/IP ports, etc.)

  • Connections utilizing a v3 driver.

  • Virtual Printers (e.g. Acrobat, OneNote)

Group Policy pushed printer connections will NOT automatically be connected; rather, they will be published in a list of recently used printers.

Configuring Printer Roaming

Printer Roaming is enabled by default, but may be turned on or off using the PC Settings app.

Note

Printer roaming may only be toggled as a complete feature. Choosing which connections to roam is not currently supported.
