MissingMemberException.Message Property

Microsoft Silverlight will reach end of support after October 2021. Learn more.

Gets the text string showing the class name, the member name, and the signature of the missing member.

Namespace:  System
Assembly:  mscorlib (in mscorlib.dll)

Syntax

'Declaration
Public Overrides ReadOnly Property Message As String
public override string Message { get; }

Property Value

Type: System.String
The error message string.

Remarks

If the class name is not specified when the object is constructed, the default text string inherited from the base class is returned.

This property overrides Message. The error message should be localized.

This property is read-only.

Examples

The following example demonstrates the Message property. This code example is part of a larger example provided for the MissingMemberException class.

   Try
      ' Attempt to access a static AnotherField field defined in the Example class.
      ' However, because the Example class does not define this field,
      ' a MissingFieldException is thrown.
      GetType(Example).InvokeMember("AnotherField", BindingFlags.Static Or BindingFlags.GetField, _
                                 Nothing, Nothing, Nothing)
   Catch e As MissingMemberException
      ' Notice that this code is catching MissingMemberException which is the
      ' base class of MissingMethodException and MissingFieldException.
      ' Show the user that the AnotherField field cannot be accessed.
      outputBlock.Text += String.Format("Unable to access the AnotherField field: {0}", e.Message) & vbCrLf
   End Try
End Sub
try
{
   // Attempt to access a static AnotherField field defined in the Example class.
   // However, because the Example class does not define this field,
   // a MissingFieldException is thrown.
   typeof(Example).InvokeMember("AnotherField", BindingFlags.Static |
       BindingFlags.GetField, null, null, null);
}
catch (MissingMemberException e)
{
   // Notice that this code is catching MissingMemberException which is the
   // base class of MissingMethodException and MissingFieldException.
   // Show the user that the AnotherField field cannot be accessed.
   outputBlock.Text += String.Format("Unable to access the AnotherField field: {0}", e.Message) + "\n";
