Hi Barbara Wheeler,
Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A. I understand you’re seeing the “Enter network credentials” prompt when trying to access your main PC over the network. This usually happens when Windows requires authentication for file or printer sharing.
Before we proceed, could you please confirm: Is this the first time you are setting up network sharing between these PCs?
In the meantime, here are a few steps you can try:
Step 1: Verify the Correct Username and Password
- On the main PC, press Win + R, type
netplwiz, and press Enter. - Check the account name listed (it could be a local account or a Microsoft account email).
- If you forgot the password:
- For a local account, go to Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options → Password and reset it.
- For a Microsoft account, reset it at https://account.microsoft.com.
Step 2: Disable Password-Protected Sharing
If you want to access shared folders without entering credentials:
- On the main PC, open Control Panel → Network and Sharing Center → Advanced sharing settings.
- Expand All Networks.
- Under Password-protected sharing, select Turn off password-protected sharing.
- Click Save changes.
- Restart both PCs and try again.
Step 3: Enable Network Discovery and File Sharing
In Advanced sharing settings, under Private (current profile):
- Turn on Network discovery.
- Turn on File and printer sharing.
Click Save changes.
Step 4: Create a Matching Local Account (Optional)
If you prefer to keep password protection enabled:
- On the main PC, go to Settings → Accounts → Other users.
- Click Add other user → choose Add account.
- Create a local account with the same username and password as the one you use on your current PC.
