Hi Lady Rikki,
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A! Thanks for sharing your issue with the Western Digital Elements portable drive. This is a classic case where the hard drive itself is physically healthy (since it works on Windows 11), but there's a compatibility or driver issue with your Windows 10 machine. Here's what you should do:
1 - Rule out simple connection issues:
- Try different USB ports on your Windows 10 PC
- Avoid using USB hubs or extension cables.
2 - Update/reinstall related-drivers on your Windows 10 PC
- Open Device Manager > Go to View tab > Show hidden devices
- Expand the categories below > right-click > Update driver > Search automatically:
- Disk drives
- Universal Serial Bus controllers
- Storage controllers
- If the issue persists, unplug the drive and go back Device Manager
- Expand Disk drives > Look for anything grayed out or with exclamation mark
- Right-click any suspicious entries (especially "Western Digital…" or "USB…")
- Select Uninstall device > plug the WD drive back in for automatic reinstall.
3 - Disable fast startup in Windows 10
- Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
- Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
- Uncheck Turn on fast startup > Save > Reboot the PC and retry connecting.
4 - Update chipset and storage controllers
- Go to your PC/motherboard manufacturer's website.
- Find the support/drivers page for your specific model.
- Download and install the latest versions for:
- Chipset Drivers
- USB Drivers (if available)
- SATA/AHCI/Storage Controller Drivers
5 - If all else fails, check the disk's health on both your PC:
- Plug in the WD drive > open Command Prompt as Administrator
- On Windows 10 PC:
- Run command
wmic diskdrive get status> Enter - Check if the status is "OK". If you see an error for the WD drive, it points to a deeper communication problem.
- Run command
- On Windows 11 PC:
- Run
chkdsk W: /f /r(replaceW:with the letter of the portable drive)
- Run
- Let it complete and then try reconnecting the drive to the Windows 10 PC.
I hope this information resolves your issue. Please let me know if you need further assistance.
