When applying for microsoft partnership, I input my company's DUNS number.

It correctly identified my company, but the page says the retrieved company name is not valid. what should I do here? The company name is not something I typed, but retrieved and autofilled from DUNS input.

    Hi @tlonist ,

Thanks for raising this issue—it's a common point of confusion during Microsoft Partner Center registration, especially when using a DUNS number to autofill company details.

When the Partner Center retrieves your company name from Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) via the DUNS number, it applies a set of validation rules to ensure the name meets Microsoft's formatting and verification standards. Even if the name is correct and officially registered, it may still be flagged as invalid due to one of the following reasons:

    1. Formatting Conflicts with Validation Rules
Microsoft enforces specific rules for company names, such as:

    • No use of only special characters or repeated characters (e.g., “###” or “999”).
    • Avoiding standalone abbreviations like “LLC” or “INC” without additional context.
    • No domain extensions (e.g., “.com”) in the name. You can review the full validation criteria here.

    2. DUNS Data Mismatch or Delay
Sometimes the DUNS data retrieved by Microsoft may be outdated or formatted differently than expected. If your company name includes symbols, abbreviations, or spacing that violates Microsoft’s rules, it may be rejected even though it’s valid in D&B.

    3. Verification Status and Role Permissions
Only users with Global Admin or Account Admin roles can update legal business profiles. If your account is not authorized or pending verification, you may be restricted from editing the company name directly. In such cases, you’ll need to submit a support request with documentation showing the correct legal name. You can check it here.

    Recommended Steps:

    • Go to Partner Center > Settings > Account Settings > Legal Info and attempt to update the company name manually.
    • If the update fails, create a support request and attach a HAR file or PSR showing the error steps.
    • Alternatively, use the “I don’t have a DUNS number” option to manually enter your company details and proceed with verification.
    • Ensure your domain and email match your company name and are not personal accounts, as this can also affect verification.

Let me know if you need help navigating the Partner Center or preparing documentation for support. If not, please consider interacting with the system accordingly so I can close this case!
