Outlook.com address returning TooManyObjectsOpenedError

I can't get to my @outlook.com email account through a browser or the Outlook for Windows client (new). Starting yesterday, I got the error below. I found a few other threads with no resolution from previous years/months which seems to indicate it is a server side issue but haven't seen anyone reporting it in the last couple of days. I have already tried uninstalling/reinstalling and other standard troubleshooting steps.

The problem fixed itself - the only troubleshooting step that was relevant was Sign Out of Everywhere. Here is the link: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2253707

It definitely did not fix it within the 30-60 minutes quoted but I was able to access my outlook.com account about 12 hours later. No idea if it actually helped or if it was some other backend fix. But posting this so others don't have to wade through the long list of suggestions, most of which are not applicable. Total time where access via web/new Outlook was broken was roughly 3 days.

    Dear CHARLES MORRIS

Thank you for getting back to us, and I sincerely apologize that the previous steps did not resolve your issue. I understand how frustrating this must be. There are other workarounds you can try:

Step 1 : Clear All Active Sessions

    • Go to Microsoft Account Security → Sign out everywhere
    • Wait at least 30–60 minutes to allow Exchange to release all stale sessions and object handles.
    • Restart your device and try logging in again.

Step 2 : Reduce Mailbox Object Load

    • If you can access Outlook via mobile app or another device:
      • Remove any shared or delegated mailboxes
      • Delete or archive unused folders.
      • Try to keep total folders (including subfolders) under ~500
    • Remove unnecessary connected accounts under:
      • Settings > View all Outlook settings > Mail > Sync email.

Step 3 : Clear Browser Cache & Try Private Mode

    • If you cannot access Outlook Web, try:
      • Clear browser cache and cookies.
      • Open Outlook.com in InPrivate/Incognito mode or a different browser.

Step 4 : Disable Add-ins & Safe Mode (if using Outlook app)

    • Run Outlook in Safe Mode
      • Press Win + R, type:  outlook /safe
    • If it works, disable add-ins one by one.

Step 5 : Repair Outlook Profile

    • Go to Control Panel → Mail → Profiles → Repair
    • Alternatively, create a new profile and re-add your account.

Step 6 : If All Else Fails – Contact Microsoft Support

If none of these steps work, please kindly escalate to Microsoft Support

    To contact Microsoft Support:

    1. Visit this site: Contact – Microsoft Support
    2. Type Contact in the search box.

    Dear CHARLES MORRIS ,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A Community. I understand you are encountering too many objects opened error when accessing your Outlook.com account via a browser or the new Outlook for Windows client. I am happy to assist you with this.

Please follow the steps below to resolve the issue:

    1. Sign out everywhere and allow sessions to clear

    • Sign out of all devices (desktop, web, and mobile).
    • Close all browsers and Outlook apps.
    • Wait 15–30 minutes to allow the server to release any stale sessions and object handles.

    2. Reduce mailbox object load

    • Log in via Outlook Web if possible.
    • Navigate to Settings > View all Outlook settings > Mail > Sync email
    • Remove any shared or delegated mailboxes.
    • Delete or archive unused folders.
Recommendation: Keep the total folder count (including subfolders) below approximately 500 to avoid exceeding object limits.

    3. Request a mailbox repair (for work or school accounts)

If the issue persists, the mailbox may need a repair on the server side. Ask your IT administrator to run the following PowerShell command:

    New-MailboxRepairRequest -Mailbox "[******@domain.com]" -CorruptionType FolderView

This command rebuilds the folder view cache and clears stuck object handles.

    4. Temporary workarounds

    • Use the Classic Outlook client or the Outlook mobile app until the issue is resolved.
    • If you cannot access Outlook Web at all, please contact Microsoft Support directly :
    1. Visit this website:  Contact - Microsoft Support
    2. Type your problems in the search box there. ( For example, Contact support.)
    3. Now click on Get Help and select Contact Support below.
    4. Go to the Products & Services tab and choose the Outlook category
    5. On the Category tab, choose based on your actual problem.
    6. Go to Confirm.
    7. Choose to chat with a support representative or request a call back.

Note: The support contact team only works at certain times, so if the last window shows that it's unavailable, try opening it again the next day. If you prefer phone support, you can leave a phone number. This way, they can call you and help you.
