Microsoft Word Mobile App No Longer Allows Me To Open or Edit Documents

The Microsoft Word app will no longer allow me to open or edit any documents. I can see the files, but tapping them does nothing.

I have tried turning my phone off and on again multiple times, have force quit the app multiple times, and have even deleted and reinstalled the app. I’ve checked WiFi connection, I’ve checked that my subscription to 365 is valid and that I’m definitely logged in, and I’ve updated my phone OS. I’m at a complete loss as to what to do?

I also contacted support, but despite them assuring me they were escalating my issue to level 2 I have heard nothing from them.

How can I get this functionality back? As a writer with a fulltime job I found it really helpful to be able to edit documents on the go and have them sync to OneDrive. Is this a function I can get back, or have Microsoft made a decision to withdraw it from their mobile app? I’m really frustrated by this and would appreciate any help or insight.

I can understand how disruptive and inconvenient it must be to have your Microsoft Word app stop opening and allowing document edits, especially as a writer.

According to Microsoft’s official guidance, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint mobile apps for Windows are no longer available: "While they may continue to function after that date, using unsupported software could lead to potential security risks and other issues as no further updates, security fixes, or technical support will be available for them (since October 14, 2025)".

However, there are several alternative ways you can view, create, and edit documents, spreadsheets, and presentations on a variety of devices:

Get the Microsoft 365 Copilot app for iOS or Android phones and tablet devices. It’s the evolution of the old Microsoft 365 (Office) app, redesigned to integrate Copilot AI features.
Use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on the web for free. Learn more.

Note: You don’t need to upgrade your PC apps immediately. As long as both devices use OneDrive and the same account, your files will stay in sync.

Thanks for this Norah-L. That is disappointing news as it was really helpful for me to have these apps on my phone so I can edit documents on the go but it is what it is. Thanks again for your response :)

I know it was handy that you could edit on the go with phone and in fact you can still do that on Microsoft 365 Copilot app (mobile version). This is actually the replacement for the old Office and standalone Word apps (by combining Word, Excel, and PowerPoint into one app and adds AI-powered Copilot features). It is a change, but you'll still have the same editing capabilities, plus some new tools.
