Myanmar fonts typing error

I have been using OneNote on Windows 10 until now, but recently received a notification stating that it will switch to read-only mode on October 14, 2025.

Therefore, I updated to the latest version from the Microsoft Store, but after the update, I encountered this problem.

I found the same question asked in 2022 with no answer.

Hey Ian, for more information, I've tried on my Win11 Laptop, my colleague's Win11 PC and laptop. The same problem happened with this version of OneNote. So, I don't think this is related to my font's settings or windows settings. So, unless OneNote fix the input conversion for the Unicode of the Burmese, this problem won't go away in my opinion. Therefore, if you want to close this up, please do so. Thanks for helping me during this time.

From your description, it seems like the new version of OneNote/Office is not rendering Myanmar (Burmese) script correctly, likely due to font substitution or rendering changes.

Here are some steps that you can try:

Ensure a proper Myanmar Unicode font (Noto Sans Myanmar, Pyidaungsu,...) is installed in Windows.
In OneNote / Office font settings, set Burmese / Myanmar as default font to that installed font.
Turn off or override font fallback / substitution so it won't pick a font without the glyphs.
Use Office Repair via Control Panel: office > Modify > Repair, to clear font cache corruption.
Open the same notebook in OneNote 2016 / desktop version - that version may still render properly.
Check Windows "Language & Region" settings, ensure Burmese / Myanmar is added and Unicode option support that script.
If the problem started after the update, try rolling back to a previous build or uninstalling the newest update.

Thank you for your comment. I have checked my settings again according to your instructions, but there is no change in the situation.

To clarify, newly typed Burmese text in the latest version of OneNote does not display correctly. However, older files created in the previous version still appear normally. In addition, other applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint display Burmese text without any problem. Therefore, I believe this issue occurs only in the latest version of OneNote.

Unfortunately, I cannot continue using the old version, as it will switch to read-only mode in five days.

If Myanmar text is not displaying correctly when typed in the latest version of your OneNote while the older notes still show fine, this may be changes due to how OneNote handles font rendering or fallback fonts after a recent update.

Here are some other workarounds that you can kindly try:

Clear Font and App Caches: Delete the Windows font cache to reset rendering behavior:

Open File Explorer and go to: %windir%\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\FontCache

Delete all files in that folder.

Restart your computer.

Also, clear OneNote cache if needed %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneNote

Repair or Reinstall Office:

In Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select Microsoft Office and choose Change > Quick Repair.

If that does not help, try Online Repair or a full reinstall.

Override Font Fallback (Registry):

Adjust Windows registry settings to change fallback fonts for Myanmar script. Example path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\FontSubstitutes (choose the Font you desire)

Here are some more workarounds that you can kindly try:

Fully reset Windows font subsystem:

Run these commands in PowerShell (Admin):

net stop "Windows Font Cache Service" del /f /s /q "%WinDir%\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\FontCache" net start "Windows Font Cache Service"

Reset Windows.

Reset or reinstall the Office app profile completely:

Sign out of Office completely.

Delete Office data folders.

Reboot.

Reinstall Office (using Online Repair from Control Panel > Programs > Office > Change > Online Repair).

Test a new Windows user profile

Create a new Windows user account > log in > try typing Myanmar text there. If it works fine, the issue is limited to the old profile — you can migrate data to the new one.

Reinstall language pack:

Go to Settings > Time & Language > Language & region > Add a language > Burmese (Myanmar).

After installation, open “Optional features” > add “Supplemental fonts” if missing.
