You'll need a current license for Office 2024 or Microsoft 365 to activate your software. Or if you have an previously purchased Office 2021 or 2024 license, you may be able to activate using that. Dear Willem Bosma
Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A forum.
Based on the information you provided, I understand that you are attempting to download Office 365 version 16.88.

According to my research, you can find compatible Office 365 versions at the following link: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdates/update-history-office-for-mac
Please note the following important considerations:

    • License Removal: Before installation, it is recommended to run the license removal tool: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/how-to-remove-office-license-files-on-a-mac-b032c0f6-a431-4dad-83a9-6b727c03b193
    • System Compatibility: If you are unable to download from the link above, you may try the Mac App Store. However, ensure that your system is running macOS Monterey 12.7.6.
    • Version Support: Office 365 version 16.88 is the final update compatible with macOS Monterey 12.7.6. Newer versions, such as 16.90, require macOS 13 or later.
    • Known Issues: Outlook 16.88 may encounter critical issues on macOS Monterey, including system crashes, inability to move emails, and lack of support for mail rules.
    • Alternative Versions: If you experience errors after installation, you may consider using an earlier version such as 16.43 or 16.59.

After installation, it’s advisable to disable automatic updates to prevent upgrading to newer versions that require macOS Ventura or later:

    • Open any Office app (e.g., Word or Excel)
    • Go to Help > Check for Updates

In Microsoft Auto Update, choose Advanced > Manually Check
    User's image

    Important Notes

    • Office 365 v16.88 is the last version supported on macOS Monterey.
    • Outlook 16.88 may experience issues such as crashes, inability to move emails, and lack of support for mail rules.
    • If you encounter problems, consider using an earlier version like 16.59 or 16.43.

I hope this information proves helpful. Should you need further assistance or encounter any additional issues, please feel free to share. I am always ready to support you.
