Update that restricts preview of PDF

I am simply writing to beg you to correct the issues with not being able to preview a pdf in Microsoft Word that was instituted in the last update. Yes, I understand I can "unblock" it, but it is incredibly time consuming to unblock every single pdf in our files that are not generated within our office. I understand that you want to offer a level of security, but this is not efficient at all.

This is a user-to-user support forum and is not the place to get any fixes made to the program. The people who can do that do not see anything you post here. To get the message to them, see https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/giving-feedback-on-microsoft-word-or-other/8df81a9b-84aa-46ef-bf88-24fb7fec96ba

I agree completely with Andrea B. I routinely view many documents at one time on 3 screens for work and I use to be able to "preview" them without having to open each one. The new update has made this process for me more laborious from a time perspective. It's astonishing to me that Microsoft couldn't figure a way around this in all their infinite wisdom. I have to now unblock each and every item I download from trusted sources.

    Hi @Andrea B

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with us. I truly appreciate your feedback and understand how frustrating and time-consuming this issue can be for your workflow. Please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused by the recent changes affecting PDF previews in Microsoft Word.

The recent update introduced enhanced security measures that block certain files such as PDFs received from external sources from being previewed directly in Word. While this helps protect users from potential risks, we understand that in environments where you handle a large number of external PDFs, having to manually “Unblock” each file can significantly slow down your processes and impact efficiency.

As a forum moderator, I hope you understand that I don’t have the ability to modify or escalate product issues directly. However, I strongly recommend submitting your feedback through the Word · Community. This is the most effective way to ensure your voice reaches the product team and can be considered for future improvements.

The issue you're experiencing with the inability to preview PDFs in Microsoft Word may be related to security measures that have been implemented. These measures are intended to prevent potential data leaks and enhance security by blocking certain file types from being previewed or opened directly. Unfortunately, this can lead to inefficiencies, especially when dealing with multiple PDFs that require unblocking.

Currently, Microsoft 365 for the web has deprecated PDF viewing support, which may affect how PDFs are handled in various applications, including Word. Additionally, the security features in Microsoft Edge, which include process isolation and Application Guard, are designed to protect users from compromised PDFs, but they may also contribute to the challenges you're facing when trying to preview files.

If you frequently work with PDFs that are not generated within your office, you might consider discussing this with your IT department to explore potential solutions or workarounds that can streamline the process of unblocking these files.
