Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Dear @Sarah BV,
Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum.
I understand how frustrating this situation can be. Based on your description, it appears that your computer and the Microsoft Account Picker have cached security tokens for former work or business accounts, even though those accounts are now closed.
Because these were "Work/Business" accounts, they are often deeply integrated into the Windows operating system and your Office apps. Since you can no longer sign in to "Leave" the organizations, you must manually scrub them from your local device.
As a forum moderator, I genuinely wish I could directly access your account or delve into the backend systems to diagnose and fix this for you. However, our role here is limited to providing general guidance and solutions that can be applied by users. Please follow the steps below in order and check whether the issue is resolved after each one.
1: Disconnect from Windows Settings
- Click the Start button and go to Settings (gear icon).
- Go to Accounts > Access work or school.
- Look for the two old business email addresses.
- Click on each one and select Disconnect.
Note: If "Disconnect" is missing or you get an error, it is likely because the account was used to set up the PC or it's a deep "Admin" link. If that's the case, move to Step 2.
2: Clear the Credential Manager
Windows stores "Generic Credentials" for logins that persist even after accounts are deleted.
- Open the Control Panel and select User Accounts > Credential Manager.
- Select Windows Credentials.
- Look for any entries that mention MicrosoftOffice16_Data:ADAL or your old business email addresses.
- Click the arrow next to them and select Remove.
3: Remove "Connected Services" in Office
Even if you are signed in with your Family subscription, the Office apps (Word, Excel) may still be trying to "talk" to the old business OneDrive or SharePoint folders.
- Open Word or Excel.
- Click on File > Account.
- On the left side, under Connected Services, look for the old business accounts.
- Click Remove or Disconnect next to them.
Tip: If the account shows up as the "Primary" account on the top left, sign out of all accounts (including your Family one), then sign back in with only your Family email.
4: Clear the "Sign-in Cache"
If the accounts still appear in the "Choose an account" list in your browser (Edge/Chrome):
- Go to login.microsoftonline.com.
- When the list of accounts appears, click the three dots (...) next to the old business account.
- Select Forget or Forget this account.
I hope this information is helpful. Please follow these steps and let me know if it works for you. If not, we can work together to resolve this. Thank you for your patience and understanding. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please feel free to share them in the comments so I can continue to support you. I'm looking forward to your reply.
