How to Log into Authenticator on a New Phone?

I recently got a new iPhone. I need Microsoft Authenticator for college purposes but in order to sign into my college account on the Authenticator app, it’s asking me to verify with the code on Authenticator (from the account which I’m trying to sign into in the first place). It isn’t giving me the option to sign in from a phone number or email, only Authenticator codes (which I am not receiving because I’m not signed in). I can see my accounts, but they have “Sign in to add your account” beneath them in red. I no longer have my old phone as it has been wiped with my data transferred over. I need to log back in as soon as I can, and this situation has been very frustrating. What should I do?

Hello @Munique, Miles

Thank you for reaching out to the Q&A forum!

Since this is a school/university account, the ability to recover MFA is managed by your organization’s IT department. Please take note that Microsoft cannot directly intervene in organizational accounts.

So, you need to contact your Helpdesk or IT team and request them to:

Revoke or reset your MFA settings in the Microsoft Entra Admin Center (remove the current authentication methods).

For step-by-step details, refer to the official Microsoft documentation: Manage authentication methods for Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication - Microsoft Entra ID |…

Once your IT administrator resets your Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) settings, the next time you sign in to your organization’s resources, you will be prompted to set up new security verification methods.

I understand that this situation can be a bit complicated to contact your school’s IT department, but only your school's IT department can access the backend settings for your Microsoft 365 account.

Find Your Microsoft 365 Admin: If you’re unsure who the Global Admin is within your school, you can find guidance on locating them here: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support

User's imageAlthough I am a forum moderator and do not have access to your backend systems to help you directly, I have provided a detailed guide above that you can share with your school’s IT department.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

If you no longer have access to your old phone and cannot receive the verification codes from the Microsoft Authenticator app, you will need to recover your account using alternative methods. Here are some steps you can take:

    1. Use Backup Codes: If you had previously set up backup codes for your account, you can use one of those codes to log in.
    2. Account Recovery: Visit the account recovery page of your college's authentication system. They may have options to recover your account using your email or phone number.
    3. Contact Support: Reach out to your college's IT support or help desk. They can assist you in regaining access to your account and may be able to reset your authentication methods.
    4. Reinstall Authenticator: Once you regain access, you can reinstall the Microsoft Authenticator app on your new phone and set it up again. Make sure to add your accounts back into the app after you have successfully logged in.
    5. Enable Recovery Options: For future use, consider enabling recovery options or backup methods to avoid similar issues.

These steps should help you regain access to your account and set up the Microsoft Authenticator app on your new phone.
